Somehow I ended up watching that whole damn Defcon presentation on the Archive Team. It's pretty interesting to think about how such large quantities of user-generated content can be wiped away so easily. So much history, just gone from the web. True, a lot of it was probably sites dedicated to people and their pet cats, but still, there's probably something worthwhile stashed in those 650GBs.

And Jason Scott seems to be everywhere! textfiles.com, BBS: The Documentary, GET LAMP, GDC Vault, etc.

There might be a really old version or two of my website in there. I was on Geocities wayyyyy long ago before I got my domain name. My website was: "Gemini000's Programming and Games Page". I think I was in the "Times Square" section of the Geocities naming layout... can't remember my site number though. I think it was 2000-something. *shrugs*

What I'm hoping is that someone hosts all 650 gigs somewhere so that all those lost sites are once again accessible.

http://www.oocities.org/ is one mirror amongst others.

Thanks to the OP for posting this. Truly fascinating talk and has bought the Archive Team to my attention. Really great stuff. Surreal seeing old stuff (such as the usenet posts from 1980!!) and sad to think that it'd otherwise be gone forever.

I'm actually somewhat surprised it's ONLY 650GB, considering now you can pick up a 1TB Enterprise storage drive for around a hundred bucks.

I mean, yeah, connections were slower and people weren't using rich media or anything then, so files/sites would be smaller, but there still were a *lot* of people using it.

Now I'm going to have to go look up people I know to see if their embarassing old sites still exist!

If all else fails, use fire.

Ah another cool site. Wish I knew of more... I remember visiting some at one time, but can't remember any of them anymore.
