Hi everybody!

After I could not find any Covox to buy I've decided to build one myself. Here is the result: http://youtu.be/rKb1F-ApK3s and another video with more music http://youtu.be/x2iZFVoOq68.

Cheers!

Very cool!

Wish these DIY guides were available when I was a kid...

Any chance you could record a few DOS games?

The links to download MOD files are in the video's description.

There is not many games to play with Covox and you can find gameplays from some of them on YouTube already (Pinball Fantasies, Wolf 3D).

Well.. covox /speech thing is "just" a DAC bolted into the printer port, if I remember correctly. In any case there's no synthesis, so it sounds like the samples that are played through it, not like a gameboy.. =) Didn't know they come in stereo variety though.

Ok I have a question for Dosbox developers and Covox maker, how do you make Wolfenstein 3D detect it as Disney Sound Soure, can i connect LPT pin 10 constantly to GND sufficient. Or is the detection mechanism more clever?

Come on dudes, you made dosbox Disney Sound Emulation, and you can not give me istructions, how to make my covox behave like a Disney!

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.

That i know! But if you cheat your program to use Disney driver with Covoxer, the sound works, it only checks that the FIFO buffer is not full, and FIFO tells it to the computer by holding LPT pin10 low. If it goes high, then it does not send sound information. Am I right?

Detection routines vary between games, but typically they check that the FIFO reports full after a certain amount of writes, so yes they are more clever. The DSS also generates the sampling rate (FIFO emptying), so even if you trick it into being detected it will not sound correct, depending on the routine used by the game.
