hello,

2 days ago i found the old game Z from the bitmap brothers in the deeps of my cd casket.

i heard, that i won't work with anything newer than win98. then i found this forum - yeah enlighten me :)

next step was to find threads about "Z" but it's kinda hard to find something wich is only 1 letter long....

i found one thread about it, and some guy said he managed it to run Z under a cvs version of DOSBox. i only tried with DOSBox 0.6.0 und windows and the debian .deb version 0.6.0-3.
both didn't work. on the windows version, i was able to get a error msg before the DOSBox window just closes:

"Exit to error: Task IRET"

anybody had this error before?

well the debian 0.60-3 is quite more advantaged then the 0.60 release so you get best results there. Try starting dosbox from an Xterm to see the errormessage there.

Anyway. The cvs is even more compatible then 0.60-3. See in the development forum for a link to windows version.
For linux just checkout out the cvs and compile it.

ok now i played around a bit more with debian. the magnificant conclusion:

i see the intro + menu :))

the bad thing: when i try to load a game (new game LEVEL01) the program tells me:
file not found: level01.map

but the file is in right folder (LEVEL01\LEVEL01.MAP) and i mounted the cd as D
and told the ZED.EXE with /CD:D to use it...

i even tried to make a Z game folder inside the DOSBox session and copied the whole installation there, but without any success

did you mount your cdrom as D but as cdrom like in

mount d /mnt/cdrom -t cdrom ?
maybe with a usecd option as well (it's in the manpage for more details)

hm i just copied the whole files from the cd to some folder called Z_CD and started dosbox with -x "MOUNT D Z_CD"

maybe it's some sort of copy protection? should i try with the real mounted cd?

that flag -t cdrom is really important.
it can be used on your copied directory.

yep -t cdrom did the trick, mscdex mounted it as cdrom

but level01.map was still missing. it is in folder LEVEL01 in the install dir.

i tested to copy all the files out of LEVEL01 to the Z root and voila, it works!! :))

only normal vga, with no sound atm, but i can play my good 'ol Z on my linux.

thank you, Qbix

Neat.
Weird that the files were still missing though.
Hmm well a nice candidate to check out 😉

Glad it works 😀 Is it playable at 4000 cycles ?

As Always (see the dosbox shell):

Have Fun!!!

Could someone post a nice easy step-by-step deal on how you chaps managed to get the wonderful "Z" rolling on XP ? I am getting serious jitters from lack of Z for the past 2 years !!!

To say i dont know where to START would be an understatement !

I'm having the same weird problem with files not being found in Syndicate. Actually, the game works but I can't get the intro movie to work (intro.exe). The files are there (in a data subdirectory). I've tried a version from the internet and from a CD I own. I won't create a thread since it's not that important, but it's related to his difficulties with Z.

hello there, i am new to dosbox and this forum =)

i got the same Problem ("Exit to error: Task IRET") when i try to start z
.. using DosBox .60 for w32

i have mounted my z folder and the cdrom properly, but when i try to execute the game with z.bat (zed.exe is not working > it tells me i have to use z.bat) the error occurs..

I wanted to dl a W32 CVS built of dosbox, but i first have to post 2 "good" posts to get a reputation granded by a service bot to get the permission to download it.. but what the hell should i write? 0o I just need this cvs.. maybe with those cvs builts i can also play settlers > see another thread, the problem "combining a way with a flag" .. i got it, too ... =/

Does any1 have ideas to solve it without those cvs builts or am i forced to post something at the mypixel forums?

Windows XP SP1
Epox 8k3a

AMD Barton 3200+

Its working under windows xp!

U first have to run SETVIDEO.exe and to auto config ur univbe settings. Then as follow :

settings :

-fullscreen (in ur dosbox connectionfile parameters)

mount d d:\ (the partition where z is)

mount e e:\ -t cdrom (cdrom with z cd)

i started the game with z.exe and it works!

its a bit slow though.. (only testet SVGA)

Dosbox .60 settings : 11126 cpu cycles (seems to produce the "best" performance) frameset settings doesn`t make any sence to me. I neither know what this setting does ^^

today i will test its lan capabilities with windows xp and dosbox.
(got 2 german versions from z =))

Hi I´have a Problem with my sound an gamspeed in "z" /zed.

(AMD 2700+,512MB Ram,Win98se,Dosbox V0.61,SBlaster Live 5.1 digital)
The grafic works well an really smoth around 10800 cycles.
But when play with 10800 cycles, the sound is too slow. It stutters around....
Only at 4000 cycles the sound ist well. But then the grafic ist too slow....

What can i do ?
Any ideas ?
