Loads of free adventure games have been released recently. My favourite is Pleurghburg: Dark Ages, which is a whole lot better than the name implies. http://www.gaspop.com/index.html?darkages

Tierra http://www.tierraentertainment.com/ has couple of VGA remakes of the first two King's Quest games and is working on a VGA remake of Quest for Glory II, all for free download.
