The save state feature is highly experimental. Quite useful, but completely unreliable. If you save/load several times in quick succession, your save state will become corrupted, no way to avoid it. 😵
I guess you corrupted your game by using save states, and the fault doesn't lie with either Barbarion or DOSBox. There's only one solution: play through it using the official DOSBox 0.74 release.
