It is nice to see that somebody from a country that has a fair use law is able to put such archive online.

For the benchmarks it would be necessary to give default settings for later comparison. Those should be chosen accordingly, that it runs also on a lower end system.
f.e. for FractInt, are you sure that this 2K resolution rendering would work on let's say a 2 MB 386.
For such cases maybe even a low end setting and a high end setting should be given.

What's a good HDD benchmark for Windows 95/98? The question of storage pops up all the time...

Also if there is a service pack / patch pack that you Windows guys always use, we could include that as well. To have a common base so to speak.

Include a text file with web-addresses to where they can download drivers. Wouldn't take up much space and very helpfull.

And one big zip file? You'd end up with a file that could be several gigabytes large. Especially if you include game-demos.

PCmark 2002 is what I use to check HDD performance in Windows 98.
There are probably better choices.

I use Windows 98SE without updates.
The only thing I add is USB storage support.
I also install Direct X 8.1 if it is a fast Windows 98 system.

I have started a collection for the Rendition Verite as well, but it's not complete at this point.

While no collection of every driver version, http://www.vintage3d.org/driver.php have drivers for all the early 3D cards.

2048x1536 requires 3MB so that wouldn't work on such a system. OTOH it's not hard to make a 640x480 fractal that takes 5 minutes to render on a P2. I think you'd want to make it take at least a minute or so on fast systems, to limit quantization errors / variance (or whatever it's called). But then the same preset could take like an hour to render on 386. Making two or three presets for a different range of systems might be a good idea then... But that means you can't directly compare them anymore.

And I just thought, since fractint is available for multiple operating systems, this could also be used to measure performance difference between OS's on the same system.

How about we share the pain and everyone tests and adds one benchmark at a time?

Basically test it under W98, if it works grab a screenshot, write a little bit about it and attach a ZIP.

May I suggest you use ultra compression with 7z instead of zip. Will save a lot of space. Unless 7z isn't available for DOS, in which case rar might be the better choice.

7z is another tool someone needs to install and garble up their machine.

7z might be another tool, but so is zip (or rar).
