For me, the original apple ii is where it's at, and then revamped legend returns(windows & playstation in this video,) different but in a good way game, everything else to me is from off to really off, off sfx, overdoing it in sfx, too slow, too fast digging changes the game dynamic, etc. I can't stand the consolized lode runner in name only versions, wretched.

Pretty amazing that a 33mhz machine in the PS1 is able to mantain a decent framerate while the N64 is really choppy when you start shooting, perhaps a half assed port.

Hrm, had queued into those previously, but I don't think they provided the system skip-to links in their earlier episodes (though maybe I missed them due to full-screen play). Glad to see the skip-to links there.

The PSX port of Quake II is truly a technical marvel. I'd say it looks almost as good as Perfect Dark on the N64, and PD is one of the N64's best-looking games! I think the choppy shooting animations on the N64 Quake II just come from lazy porting and the developers not using every frame of the original animations, rather than performance problems. That being said, the PSX Quake II does seem to run smoother overall.

Oh they used the frames, they just didn't have the lerping.

Also keep in mind these were TWO DIFFERENT TEAMS - Raster and Hammerhead.

also the gratuituous shoehorned big Abrams flares in the PSX version are just stupid

What's going to happen with more recent gamers? I hardly ever hear about Nintendo vs Sega. Is the Xbox and Playstation that big of a deal?

"Lerping"?

I'm not surprised these two were handled by different dev teams. The PSX version seems to be a fairly straight port of the PC game with some minor alterations, while the N64 version has entirely different levels.

I don't really mind the flares to be honest. They kind of remind me of the flares on PD or UT99.

Watching further, it seems like the speed of the N64 version is actually much more consistent, whereas the PSX version gets choppy in a few sections. I'm still not sure if I prefer the N64's blurriness or the PSX's jaggies and lack of filtering. 🤣

Arcade is the best, no surprise, gameboy color, snes & genesis/megadrive look like they're running emulators, most others tried to replicate as best they could with the hardware they had to work with, sometimes these have their own charm, then there's off the reservation like jaguar with bad results, but there is one that managed to bring a refreshing enhancement, the windows version, much bigger field of view and a second mountain range parallax scrolling in the background, making me want to play it.

I've noticed that a lot of the ports in that particular comparison lack momentum on the ship. Do you know what may be the cause of that?

The Atari 800/5200 versions look good but I think all around best goes to the Amstrad because the physics look more like the arcade. Any system that came out after that time period simply isn't fair to have in the comparison since they would have had far more processing and graphics power available to them so it would have been easier to duplicate the arcade game.

Outrun DOS version only has two sound options, the other being the much better Tandy/DAC output(though I'd go with just tandy, the DAC playback is harsh and annoying): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmXem7NT6fA Gameboy advance/genesis/saturn/dreamcast closely resemble the arcade version. The Playstation 2 revamp is the best, it retains the feel of the game while having new visual experience. Compare to Outrun 2006, which doesn't seem like Outrun at all.

It is. If you watch until the end of the video, you can see Quake II running with just the normal Jumper Pak, and it's not pretty. 🤣 It's not very well made though, with the normal version the visuals and framerate are below average for an N64 game, with the Expansion Pak the visuals and framerate are just average, with the exception of the terrible weapon animations.
