Not an Apple person so I don't know how this fits in but all the early Sierra games like Space Quest 1 and 2 or Kings Quest 1,2 and 3 have vastly superior music on the Apple version. And mouse control for the character 😀

I think it's the same as the Tandy 3-voice music for those games.

Gotta get me a Tandy one of these days...

I wish I could run some of these. They require 16 colour mode which is not available on G3s and newer.

If you can extract the files from the game, try to run them using ScummVM (may browse to a subfolder included in the package to get it recognized). Althought, it seems confusing in the first place, when you expect black & white graphics, to see full colour.

Well the Apple has a chip from Ensoniq I believe. Here is what it sounds in an emulator:

It has digital sound recording at the start!

Ah, you meant the original Apple, not Mac.

The Mac version of Space Quest 2 sounds almost exactly like the Tandy version. I don't have any Apple ][ systems, I'm sad to say.

I'll crank up my Powerbook and give you a taste. 😀

Bit harsher than the Tandy 3-voice, but it sounds like it's the same music data.

Pathways Into Darkness is a good game that was released only on mac.
It is an early FPS game that is more about exploring than shooting, made by the creators of Marathon and Halo.

Slightly off-topic, but you have to be careful about buying 'new' Mac games that are supposedly Classic OS compatible. I picked up a new copy of StarCraft thinking I could install it on my 1999 iMac G3 running OS 9 but found that it only installs on OS X. To get a Classic OS version you probably have to go looking on eBay. The game hasn't changed I assume, they just removed the option to install it in classic.

Edit: and it won't install on Windows NT 4.0 either. The installer crashes on launch. The system requirements clearly say "NT" and "System 7.6" but this is a lie. This release of StarCraft is dated 2007.

Account retired. Now posting as Errius.

(not really but clearly it's right up my alley for some reason)

You must read Elfquest comics, then.

Lots of 90s games are better on mac version than dos version. See for instance Monkey Island series, Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, Prince of Persia. All have bigger resolution. See Flashback where mac version seems to be the only version that you can see also the characteristics of the hero's face (the eyes for instance). Also macintosh has better sound than sound blaster. The lucky dos users have the roland mt-32 support for lots of games which has the best sound for me than everything.

- Amiga 500, Amiga 1200
- Atari 1040 STF

The entire catalog of Pangea Software:

Games like CroMag Rally (Mario Kart type thing), Bugdom, Nanosaur (meh IMO, and was mentioned above), etc. A lot of that was ported to OS X and iOS later.

Here's one that was always stupid fun: Reckless Drivin'
