First of all, here are my specs...

130,548 KB RAM
Sound Blaster 16 ISA (non Plug and Play compatible) Model: CT2290
Pentium 200 MHZ processor
Windwos 2000 Professional

Well, just to let you know... I have problems getting my dos games to work with sound. I have a old Soundblaster 16 ISA that is non Plug and Play compatible. And it is strange that there is no sound on dos games. It s strange because my card is made in the year 1994 and it is a ISA and older cards are compatible with DOS. Do I need certain sound card drivers to get the dos games to work or I need to install dos? I'm planning to dual-boot. But I'm not sure how to to this. I have PC DOS 6.3. Should I put a second hard drive, then install PC DOS 6.3?

do you have windows 98?
my da was just talking to me about how to dual boot dos and win xp 5 min before i saw this thread.
As far as i remember, if you have xp installed you will need to reinstall it (no need for format). but first you need to deleate your windows dir, install win 98 then install xp. 98 and xp will dual boot which means as an os you get xp but with dos. hope it helps.

ADDITION: check this thread i found Dual boot
i, again, hope it helps.

Mike, if you don't mind scrapping the Win2K install, then yes - install DOS 6.3, with the necessary SB drivers, and get 1 or games working. Then install Win2K. It should recognize and keep the DOS 6.3 install intact, while installing itself as an alternative OS.

Well, just to let you know, I do not mind even a bit scrapping Win2k, But I have a old Windows game I have been trying to work forever. It is Cold Shadow. I been trying for more than 2 months to get it to work. So is there any way to install Windows 98 and dual boot with DOS 6.3?
If there is a way, I would like detailed instructions about how to dual boot DOS 6.3 and Windows 98. And one more thing. My dad threw away all the old operating system disks. 😳 Why whould my dad do that?! Well, anyway, is there a cheap price for Windows 98 or Windows 95?
PS: What driver files do I need for my SoundBlaster 16?
Anyway, here is detailed info about my card.
Model: CT2290
Year made: 1994
Also known as: SB 16 PRO CSP
I hope this detailed info helps.

I don't understand the problem??? Windows98 is built on top of MS-DOS. All you need to do is to press ... what F6 or F8 or somesuch .. while Win98 boots, and you are offered to boot into MS-DOS only.

I even think Win98 contains tools to create a true MS-DOS boot diskette, complete with real-mode DOS drivers.

Edit: Drivers for your SoundBlaster can surely be downloaded from Creative, right? Look for something called sbpup.exe (Sound Blaster Pro Updates).

No need to buy Windows 9x if you just want Dos. Download FreeDos. It's much better and it's still supported.

I used Roxio Easy CD Creater to create the FreeDOS bottable disk. And the image I selected for the bootdisk is "fdoscd.png". And when I started up the computer, It read "Loading Boot Record form ATAPI CD- Drive.. OK."
And it was just sitting there doing nothing. I waited for more than 10 minutes, and I saw no FreeDOS setup screen.

Here are the following files that are in the FreeDOS boot CD...

.README
B9BASE01.IMG
B9BASE02.IMG
B9BOOT01.IMG
BOOTCAT.BIN
BOOTIMG.BIN
fdbootcd.iso
fdos1440.img
fdoscd.png
freedos.png
rawrite.exe
readme.html
readme.txt
S9BASE01.IMG
S9BASE02.IMG
S9BASE03.IMG
S9BASE04.IMG

Is there anyway to correct this problem?

Mike, you might be lucky and someone with knowledge about FreeDOS, Roxio, and how to create a bootable FreeDOS visits this forum, but I wouldn't bet on it. You will hae a much better chance by asking about creating a bootable FreeDOS CD-ROM in a forum where FreeDOS (or Roxio) is the main topic - and then return here when you have installed FreeDOS and needs to get an old game up and running.

Ever since FreeDOS is a pain in the neck to install, I'm planning to install PC DOS 6.3 instead. But when I started the installation, It said, PC DOS 6.3 files cannot be installed on your harddisk because all the primary partion table entries on your disk are already in use. Press enter to correct the problem."
What should I do about this?

PS: the error I get when I try to install FreeDOS is "bad command file name hdd.bat". This is the reason why I'm going for PC DOS 6.3 instead.

Mike - if you are being ignored, while others are not, have you sat down and thought about why this is??

Personally, for me you come across as a whiner that expects - or should I say demand - me to help you. That is not an attitude that will earn you many points with me. Secondly, you seem to blatantly ignore my advice of getting assistance with installing FreeDOS from people who specialise in FreeDOS.

Anyway.... Given that you have no interest in keeping your old Win2K and PC-DOS is complaining about all the primary partition entries being in use, I think you should simply re-format your harddisk.

If you can boot from that PC-DOS diskette do that, and then run the FDISK program. Delete any logical partitions from the harddisk, and then any primary partitions. Next create a primary partion of some suitable size (500 MB - 1 GB). You might get the choice of creating the primary partition as an FAT or FAT32 partition. It should not make any difference, but I would play it safe and go for old-fashioned FAT, not FAT32.

Once the primary partion is created, you might want to reboot from the diskette again to give PC-DOS a chance of discovering new, shiny primary partion. If you can, try using the command "FORMAT C:" to (re)format the new partition, followed by "SYS C:" to transfer the PC-DOS system from the diskette to the harddisk.

Sadly, I found out that DOOM is not compatible with PC DOS 6.3. So I'm planning to insall MS-DOS 6.0, but on disk 2, there is WATCOM files instead of the MS-DOS files on Disk 2.

Is there anyway to download MS-DOS 6.0 disk 2 files? I'm not missing disk 2, it is just that somebody replaced the files on disk 2.
Is this legal?

Mike, who said (where was it said) that DOOM is incompatible with PC-DOS 6.3 but works with 6.0? Would FreeDOS work (now that you know how to FDISK + FORMAT)? If FreeDOS works, then you don't have to worry about that 2nd diskette.

Well, the problem is when I type "INSTALL" at the coomand prompt, it said to install MS-DOS, then there were steps on hoe to do it. But disk 2 does not have setup data. Besides, I do not know how to create a freedos boot CD without problems. I don't really know how to create a complete Freedos installation floppy.

Well, did you try to just install it? What is the worse that can happen if it erases your current DOS install?
