I did patch the game and I have the latest video drivers and the characters are barely perceivable.

In case you give up for some reason, I hope you are aware of the horror stories behind that particular game's uninstall routine.

I've used the Microsoft Application Compatibility Tool and the it still shows up as ghosts but more defined. Any other suggestion will be of great help.

I remember playing this one a while back and with newer drivers (I have a Nvidia card) and I had to disable DirectDraw acceleration.

You can do that by selecting:
Start/Run....then type DXDIAG ---> Display/Disable DirectDraw acceleration

Don't forget to turn DirectDraw acceleration back ON when finished.

I tested using you recommendations and it worked.
