Whenever I try to run SSI Gold Box Champions of Krynn in DosBox whether I set my mode to CGA or VGA it only ever runs in 4 colors. I know it has a 16 color mode, but it won't start. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Have you forced DOSBox into VGA mode (in the dosbox.conf)?
Yes, it’s my fault.
I set the mode to VGA in the .conf file, I tried CGA too, then VGA again. It really hasn't made a difference... the game comes up in 4 color CGA only - though in VGA mode the colors are slightly a different shade for the cyan and magenta.
Is it possible that the 16-colour mode is for Tandy?

Tried that too, but no, when I played this long long ago on a 386 it certainly had EGA graphics.
CGA is 4 colors.
just delete the file Krynn.cfg
and configure the game again
Deleting krynn.cfg worked for me, thanx!
