the last P4 I had was in 2003! it was a Northwood 2GHz, after that I went all AMD until 2009...

the P4 I always wanted back then was the 3.06 Northwood (first HT enabled desktop P4 and very fast against the Athlon XPs back then), I can find them cheaply on ebay and such from China, but they seem to be from laptops mostly, newer revisions (but still the same basic specs), I wonder if that would be problematic for the old motherboards?

Yes. On normal boards like P4P800 they are locked at 1600MHz (133MHz x 12) and SL627 does not have HT enabled. Source : LINK (it's german site, so google translator is recommended for those that do not speaking german 😉).

I got a couple ES's for s478, but I 'think' these are Celerons 🤣
Never got around to test them, mostly because I spend very little time on any s478 hardware.

P4 collection, yeah quite a few pieces. 😀 http://hw-museum.cz/collection-cpu.php?opt0=0 … earch=pentium+4

Most valuable for me are 2.8 Northwood FSB 533 and 3.06 HT... as these work on most AGP 3.3V compatible boards...

Damn, you got a really rare ES, i tried a google search and i couldn't find practically nothing, does that model has the multiplier unlocked? (if you can test it) some ES P4s does have the multi unlocked

There are 3 types of 3.06 GHz Northwood P4, the desktop one and two mobile versions.

The desktop one uses (the one you should look) these following S-Specs:
SL6JJ
SL6K7
SL6NN
SL6PG
SL6QC
SL6S5
SL6SM

I think you should test them someday, also it can be a P4, as i said before, some enginering samples does have the multi unlocked as well.
Did you tried searching by their S-Spec code?

Around my Willamette P4s, i found this interesting model, unlike all my other Socket 478 Willamettes, this one has the big logo which is only common in early models i think

There a pic of that CPU along with another P4 of the same clock and S-Spec, but the other small logo.

Btw. CPU is a Pentium 4 2.53 Ghz SL6D8

Nail polish remover usually works wonders for those. Use sparingly, with a q-tip.

thank you both for the info

looking at the ebay CPUs it looks like sl6pg and sl6s5 are easy to find and inexpensive from the Chinese sellers, so I might be getting some P4 love again soon.

Yes I did, but that was years ago.

I'll go see if I have their S-Spec codes here somewhere.

I do have a Tualeron ES 1400 with unlocked multiplier, but the multipliers I set in the BIOS didn't correspond with the multiplier this ES booted with. I was testing this out when I discovered this (at 66MHz FSB I think), but remember having had some troubles getting the setup to behave and my final attempt I suppose I accidentally overclocked it too much, so it may be dead now.

Also founhd out I seemed to have some QS or ES 1000MHz Coppermine, but I dunno if this one actually has unlocked multipliers.

Let's see - not too many but:

P4-2.8 bought new in 2001 as part of an Abit SR7-8X cpu/mobo combo. With an ATI 9700 pro it was a W98 screamer until I finally switched to XP in 2005 on a new AMD based system

P4-1.8, P4-2.4 & P4-3.066 Northwoods salvaged from discarded work machines. The 3.066 is currently in service on a rebuilt 9700 pro build. Nice performer.

P4-3.2, P4-3.4 and P4-3.6/2M Prescotts: cheap ebay purchases part of a P4 experimentation project 1-2 years ago. S775 very flexible and ended up using an C2D E6700 in the final build to come out of that process, so the P4 fire breathers sit idle...

Probably a couple more lower end P4's in the box from old work pulls... I have no beef with the P4, and fond memories of the 2.8 days. But still I did need to "unlearn" acquired P4 prejudices slowly picked up on the tech sites over the years. Decent part.

As to my P4 collection, I actually never had any until about 2 months ago. Since then I acquired a socket 423 1.7GHz Willamette system, and a couple of socket 478 systems (2.0 and 2.4GHz Northwood). I also have a LGA775 motherboard/CPU(2.8GHz)/memory that I haven't actually been able to get started because of the proprietary Dell crap that it requires (PSU, fan - all with nonstandard pinouts).

Dell P4 boards and some late P3 boars (like Optiplex GX50 and GX150) and newer uses standard PSU pinouts afaik. about cooler, the older 3 pin Dell coolers could be hacked to use standard coolers, but since yours is LGA 775, it might use a newer 4 pin which i don't know it's pintout. What is your dell motherboard and CPU model? do you have pics of it? 2.8 ghz can be ethier a Pentium 4 or a Pentium D

Don't remember the exact model, and I don't have access to it right now (I'm currently in Europe on vacation). It's a P4 Northwood-based board. The PSU uses 2 small connectors (I think one is 8-pin and the other 10-pin) and the fan uses a 5-pin connector.

For Socket 478 I have
-SL7PP 3.40GHz/1M/800
-3.2GHz Extreme Edition (inside Dell)
-2.66GHz/256/533 Celeron D

For Socket 479 I have a mobile Pentium 4, never opened up the Laptop to see what it really is.

For Socket 775

I have two:
630 SL7Z9
3GHz/2M/800
One made in Costa Rica, the other made in China.

SL7J6
3GHz/1M/800

Pentium D 915 SL9KB
2.8GHz/4M/800

Pentium D 950 SL95V
3.4Ghz/4M/800

I tend to keep CPUs, even if I never actually use them. I've used the Pentium D 950 when I had a small form factor compaq. Mysteriously stopped booting one day so off it went.

Northwood 1.8A/512/400 SL63X
Prescott 2.8E/1M/800 SL79K

I got the 2.8E with the Mainboard i'm using but 55°C in bios was a bit much, as i was expecting to stick with small coolers i replaced it with the 1.8A.
My scope has since expanded a little so i'd like to get a faster option.

Board compatibility aside is there anything speaking against the 3.2/512/800 Northwood? Seems like the fastest 478 chip that isn't rare as hens teeth.

3,4GHz Northwood : LINK
3,4GHz Prescott : LINK

Cooling them is main problem.
Even Northood at 3,2GHz (w/HT) will get hot without proper air flow.
Nortwood also can't go much further (3,6-3,8GHz usually) + the SNDS thing...

Prescott's rev. C0/D0 are Really Bad (and you can get those in 3,2GHz and 3,4GHz flavours).
