You can use an adapter for DB9, but you would need a DB9 MALE to DB25 female. Or you could just get a DB9 bracket and plug that to your card.

Keep in mind that there are 2 different conventions for serial connector wiring, so if it doesn't work straight away you may need to use the other one:

The bracket is plugged in to CN4 and is set to COM1. Cute Mouse says "COM1 (03F8h/IRQ4) in mouse systems mode" at boot up, but the mouse does not work. So maybe it is due to the different convention for serial connector wiring? Or maybe there is something wrong with the adapter? Would this DB9 bracket work?

I could be wrong, but if it is a regular mouse I think it should be set to Microsoft mode instead of Mouse Systems mode.

If your 486 has one of those AMI WinBIOS you can test the mouse by simply entering BIOS with the mouse plugged in. If that doesn't work, it may be worth to check the wiring convention for your current bracket and try another bracket with the other type of wiring.

It is an AMI WinBIOS and the mouse does not move in there. I loaded CuteMouse with the /Y so that it prevented Mouse Systems mode and it said "device not found". It does not do this when I load it in Mouse Systems mode, but then the mouse does not work either. I do not know how how to check the wiring convention so do not know which one I have. It is a 10-pin serial port with an adapter to make in work with the 9-pin mouse. Maybe it is this that is screwing it up. I might just buy that DB9 bracket from eBay and just try it.

Quick update! I ordered a DB9 bracket almost a month ago and today it finally came and it works! I guess it did not like the other way I was trying to do it for some reason.

It's been a while since I worked on this build, but I think I actually have everything working now. I am using Phil's DOS startup files but I suppose I need to also install drivers for the SB16 Value CT2770? Where do I get those from and will the installation of those screw up Phil's autoexec.bat and config.sys?
