I ordered one of each and am waiting in anticipation to test them out. Based on some recordings, it is my feeling that the X2 sounds better than the XR385, but what about the S1? Can't wait...

You shouldn't have a hard time finding some S1 recordings. It is a more budget oriented product, but still sounds great and nice step-up from FM.

It's all subjective, IMO the S1 sounds much better than the AWE synth in most games.

Yes. That's true. I was only thinking of were to place the S1, the X1 and the X2 alongside other hardware such as AWE's and external MIDI devices. More like a kind of internal picture of what they are to each other. On the other hand, I will be recieving the S1 in december, so I will be having some quality time with it. 😀

As much as I like the AWE64, the synth can sound quite bad in some games, but very nice in others. It sounds great in Descent for example.

You'll be happy with the S1, I'm pretty sure about that 😊

For Descent, I think it sounds better if you load the Scc1t2.sf2 file for the AWE64 series. So happens I just went through most of the free sound fonts I could find. Anyone have a recording of the Voice Crystal sound font on the AWE64 for Descent? I'm curious to hear it on mp3, but do not want to buy it.

Slightly offtopic - what do you guys think to be the best host soundcard for these? I mean not only feature-wise, but aesthetically as well. I guess it should be black, shouldn't it? As far as soundcards with black PCBs are concerned, the only ones that come to my mind (and that have the waveblaster header of course) are Terratec's of all kinds (but they are not *that* black actually, rather dark brown like most Quantum3D cards) and the OEM Aureal SuperQuad sold under different brands (the first - "A" - revision that had that early AU8830A2 chip that was 10% slower than its newer AU8830 brother but that newer one was implemented only on later green OEM SuperQuad and blue SQ2500 cards AFAIK). Any other ideas?

Yep, that's one of those I referred to when I mentioned Terratec. Regarding features it's inferior to the Audician32 (it doesn't have a true OPL3 for FM), also I haven't had any experience with those standalone Analog Devices chips. However this card can be upgraded with the super-duper Radio module if you ever need it (and manage to find one as it's quite rare).
Actually if I were to choose among all those Terratec's, I would take something from the EWS64 line. However if one has an EWS64, I don't quite get his need for a Dreamblaster.

Here are some Voice Crystal mp3s in a zip archive, but did not use the AWE64 to make them.

Optically, I would go with the Terratec Gold 16 / 96.
It is ESS AudioDrive 1868 based, has a nice OPL3 interpretation inhouse ESFM synthesis) and a quite good SNR-ratio. It would go well with either the black S1 or the more advanced X2.

They assembled only the parts that can go in the oven, the through-hole and plasticky parts will be manual. But the header is already there. Hmm.

Are you referring to Midi_Rec_GB_2014.zip ? If so, I do not understand the naming scheme of the files contained therein. For example, VCGS4Mv4+EMU38+87 Timidity - Descent.mp3. I listened to that file, but it sounded very different from the Descent midi I listened to when running setup.exe
