I was on Vogons Wiki yesterday and I found this information about Voodoo 2.
http://www.vogonswiki.com/index.php/3dfx

What says here on this wiki page is that "However, the chipset does have some 2D features" which would be baloney because it's only a 3D accelerator at 90mhz that only does Direct 3D acceleration not 2D acceleration nor Windows GDI acceleration according to Leileilol, although there is a Voodoo 2 driver for Linux that is used as a display device, but the one for Windows is only a Multimedia device.

Troll or Proof, voodoo 2 does not do GDI acceleration.

GDI Acceleration and 2D features are totally different things. GDI acceleration implies the ability of the GPU to do certain GDI operations in HW such as blits, line drawings, etc. "2D features" in this context can mean stuff as simple as a character generator and the ability to be used as a dumb framebuffer with a putPixel functionality. Maybe some support for some INT 10h functions. 2D features and GDI acceleration are separated by more than a decade of technological advances.

"2D features" does not exclusively mean "windows GDI accelleration." The V2 has its own framebuffer that you can blit pixels to just like any 2D card. There's even a driver in Linux to span the desktop over one with a second head. So it's an ambiguous statement that could well be interpreted as correct. But I'm glad you know everything so you can correct the world.

Protip: try not to get so offended about inconsequential shit.

2d with the voodoo2 is not quite 2d.

It's referring to displaying video not rendered in hardware by the voodoo2.
For 2D video to be displayed on a voodoo2 it needs to be rendered in hardware via glide/dx/OpenGL.

This is coming from a person that used to make drivers for the voodoo2 and other 3dfx cards.

XWindows (or X11 or X Windowing System) is the Linux/Unix server/client GUI or graphics display interface. Check out X_Window_System

I believe your miss informed. A voodoo2 can display Xwindows if rendered in hardware. It's not done at the driver level.

Presents the card to the system as a 2D framebuffer device that you can do whatever with, & works with X. It's old, but still supported as a kernel module AFAIK.

The point is that it DOES NOT work for Windows. it is a XWindows driver which means it only works in Linux/Unix.

Ok,

Anyways in the Directx 6 SDK a sample app for Directdraw can render on Voodoo 2 in 2D. And there is a window with some options that says "This dialog has a few types of controls to show that everything can work on a non-GDI display as it does with a GDI based display." I wonder what those options do? It can't do GDI acceleration.

I got it from this post.

Ugh.

As has already been made perfectly clear in your other thread, that is a sample dialog with controls that do nothing.

In other words its a test, the drop down, text box and buttons do noting. its to show that the video cad is working and nothing more.

Its a test app that does nothing more then show that the video card is working.

At some point in time I was able to make Windows 2000 use the Voodoo 2 to display the desktop, some specific driver allowed this. Worked fine if I remember correctly. Not sure how 😀
