At least for me, the real deal for this board would be to load a Marvell chip PCIe 2.0 x2 SATA III controller card. I really doubt it is possible, unless someone here has managed to do so.

The reason your HD 7750 didn't work is that the motherboard does not support anything after PCIe 2.0

Q6600 won't even get close to that on this boards (so, if you play games that don't use 4 cores, it sucks compared to X6800).
Q6700 is simply "factory overclocked" Q6600 (usefull, since this MB can't OC locked CPU's far enough).
If you have enough $$$ you can get a QX9650/QX9770 and with VID mod you should be able to overclock it to 3,6GHz 😀

DO NOT BUY 45nm Dual Core CPU's other than E5700 or higher (high multiplier and low FSB are required for optimum OC).
DO NOT BUY 45nm Xeon's or 45nm Quad's with locked multipliers.

Thanks, do you think it is worth it to go from 2 GB RAM to 3.3 GB RAM? I am reading there are stability issues with 4 GB even after using the hacked BIOS 2.20A. I am currently on 2.20

If not, 2GB will be fine.

Why you want to buy a new GPU for this setup ?
Buy used GTX 460 or GTX 285/HD 5850 (first and last one give you DX11 support).

You can't force a PCI-e GPU to allocate X ammount of system RAM to graphics card.
PCI-e always "locks" fixed value of 256MB of RAM per GPU on any given card (if MB has 32-bit adress limit).
Dedicated RAM is only for AGP port only.
PCI-e will use whatever is necessary.

GPU usage isn't a problem for longevity.
Temperatures for GPU and it's VRM at those high usage levels however an be dangerous (if too high).
Check GPU temps in GPU-z.

Found it used on Amazon. Is that a better buy than the GT 730? I saw your scores on 3DMark, but did not see 06 scores...... on 06 with my current set up I get around 9,500 marks.

GTX 580 is many levels higher on the Hierarchy Chart I posted before but is only 1.5 GB VRAM. Should I get that used for its faster speed (or does that even matter with this board since it's a PCI-e x4 board) or get the GT 730 new since it has more video memory? Which would run cooler and have a lower usage percentage?

What is VRM? I run eVga Precision and find that my temperatures are around 85C and almost the entire 640 MB video memory is being used.

So according to the above, I definitely need a video card with more memory, since no more than 256mb of memory additional to what is on the video card can be allocated to memory usage? So that would be 640+256=896MB total memory for graphics?

Pretty much any PCIE 2.0 video card will work on this board? I have BIOS 2.20 (not the hacked version.) I am a bit leery of going to 4 GB because I read there are stability issues with it and it took me awhile to get my timings right even with the 2 GB (2x1 GB) Crucial memory I already have- I had to slow down DDR2-667 to DDR2-533 because my PC would occasionally automatically shut down. Do you recommend I get the DDR2-667 Crucial (2x2GB) kit? I found it for $20 on Amazon (though I don't know if this is genuine Crucial memory like the $60 kit I found on Newegg.

I am going to install Windows 10 Home x32 on this computer and try to run a dual boot XP/10 system. Should I get the memory upgrade for that and will I need to make any BIOS changes for it to work with 10 Home (and will my current video card as well as the above cards we discussed as upgrades also work with it?) Keep in mind, 3DMark's 01-06 LOVE CPU speed at GTX 580 performance level.

4GB of VRAM is meaningless with GT 730, that card will "drown" before actually using 2GB of VRAM (drown in data, or "grind to a halt" FPS wise).

PCI-e x4 will slow down GTX 580 or Radon HD 5870 on this MB, but how much... I can't be sure.

VRM is power delivering stage on PCB (MOSFETs, chokes, capacitors, drivers, etc.), since they must deliver power they will get VERY hot when GPU is under full load.
Overheatig VRM will die fast and kill GPU with it.

256MB is only reserved by BIOS.
Windows can alocate to PCI-e cards as much memory as it wants from virtual memory pool (ie.VRAM + RAM + Page File).
Simply put : Ultimate limit for capacity of VRAM is Page File size (which is on hard drive if not disabled/moved to RamDisk-type storage).
Problem with it is it's speed (GPU's need very high bandwidth memory to function at nominal speeds, going over VRAM capacity = slow down to few FPS tops).

533MHz DRAM Frequency works best on this motherboard.
If it's still too much, simply use Flexibility option (which can help in high FSB overclocking).
I can't recommend a kit that I didn't use personally, but logic dictates that all 2GB DDR2 RAM sticks should work in all DDR2 based motherboards that support 4GB of RAM while having two slots.

Windows 10 compatibility :
This board will work on Win 10, drivers for GPU's can be found on Nvidia's website.

I havent had any issues with 4GB of RAM in this motherboard, so go for it. You'll need it if you're going to use Windows 7 or Windows 10.

As agent_x007 said, GTX 580 is the fastest card you can use in these boards. The PCI-e x4 will slow down quite much! If you take the same CPU and GPU and put it in another board you'll see alot better results. You can see that on the benchmark results agent_x007 have provided earlier in this thead where a HD3850 AGP almost gets the same result as a GTX580 in 3DMark. That is also the results I've been getting. What helps is to overclock the PCI-e bus as much as you can. Having a more powerful card also allows you to get higher AA and AF without much performance loss. For some reason AA and AF settings does not seem to be as bottlenecked by the 4x bus.

Remember the settings below if you're going to run Windows 10 and/or newer graphics cards:

    Open the start menu and type cmd in the search box
Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as administrator
In the command window, type bcdedit /set pciexpress forcedisable
Reboot your computer

In any Windows version, if you have problems installing the PCI Express graphic card drivers (I had to do this with the GTX480), go to BIOS and change the following settings:
PCIE Downstream Pipeline to DISABLE (Auto is default)
PCIE VC1 Request Queue to DISABLE (Auto is default)

It's really the only board to provide full bandwidth PCIe and AGP while still maintaining great compatibility. VIA PT880 Pro/Ultra boards are nice and you get more CPU performance, but running PCIe cards with only 1GB/s of bandwidth really hurts.

Wow, those results are similar to the HD 3850 AGP?

Thanks, I was wondering why the GT 730 is rated so low (five rungs below my current card!). It appears that it uses a slower form of memory- DDR3 vs GDDR3, which is what I have right now. How was the GTX 580 with respect to overheating and power supply usage? I am using a 700W OCZ Power Supply. My Corsair 550 Watt PSU was not enough and died within 2 years of usage, but my 700W Modular OCZ PSU seems to be working well.

I see some of what you're talking about with high GPU usage already with the board I currently have. I had to downclock the GPU because temps were over 100C at stock speeds and 95% GPU usage. That's why I am worried about a GTX 580 heating up even more- my current GPU uses 150W of power, I read that the GTX 580 uses 250W of power and the GT 730 only uses 49W of power.

I have set 8 GB from my hard drive as virtual memory, but I notice that when the page file is being used, the system grinds to a halt. I have to wait while the system moves swaps memory back and forth (I use the CleanMem minimonitor to measure this.) The question is is the 4 GB DDR3 of the GT 730 better than using 640 MB GDDR3 of the current video card plus 2 GB DDR2 RAM plus 8 GB of virtual memory? Or should I just go the GTX 580 route and not worry about it heating up more than my current board does (which already heats up a lot.) Will the GPU usage be less with the GTX 580 than it is with my current board since it's a more powerful board?

Have you used 4 GB RAM on your board and not experienced any stability issues?

Thanks about Win 10 compatibility, but I was specifically asking about any BIOS settings that I should set differently from what I set them for Win XP. I read somewhere that the graphics drivers won't load properly if I don't change the BIOS settings.

Thanks, how is the GTX 580 in terms of overheating? I hope my 700W OCZ Modular PSU will be enough for it- my 550W Corsair PSU was not enough for my 8800 GTS 640MB 112 SP. How does one overclock the PCI-e bus and does this overheat and shorten the life of the GPU?

I think better results with AA and AF are because you are now putting the GPU to work thus reducing the overhead, which brings the bus more in line with faster PCI-e slots. In other words, AAxAF reduces the "ceiling" for the faster slots too so everything becomes more equalized.

Thanks for that, I read that Win 10 requires BIOS settings changes from Win XP even though I had already changed some BIOS settings to get the drivers to work with XP. Are those the only three settings to look for? I hope PCI-e forced disable does not disable the PCI-e slot 🤣!

Here's a weird thing, I just searched for all 3DMark scores using the Q6600 as the CPU and then selected for 8800GTS, 8800GTX and GTX 580, and all had around the same top scores- 20,000 Marks! GT 730 was somewhat lower.

I looked at their 3D Vantage scores and they're pretty similar too. Based on this, I really should go for the GTX 580 but I'm wondering if I need a new PSU. My 700W PSU has 50A divided equally between two 12V rails. I also have 3 80mm Vantec tornado fans, 3 ODD and 8 USB ports, a sound card, a pci slot cooler and a gigabit ethernet card in my pci slots.

I own MSI's GTX 580 Lightning - it doesn't overheat : LINK 😉
But reference model of GTX 580 is kinda toasty (not as much as GTX 470/480 tho).
700W OCZ shouldn't have problem with it.
Keep in mind, there is always Radeon 5870 which is little less hot than your 8800 GTS ("112SP" 90nm).

3DMark 06 is a CPU heavy test (when you put a DX10+ GPU inside).
Still, GPU's scale quite nicely on it (4CoreDual boards need big L2 caches in CPU to hide pretty crappy IMC) :

3DMark's 06 HD 5870 valid link (with OC'ed Q9770) : LINK

As for HD 3850 vs. GTX 580 vs. 5870... 3850 doesn't stand a chance/"get's rekt" in higher resolutions or with AA/AF (in low details they are all the same - PCI-e x4 and slow RAM subsystem, it's only VIA).

In Crysis under Win XP, HD 5870 is best out of those three.
GTX 580 will be better under Windows 7 or newer, and in modern games (5870 doesn't have updated drivers).

Thanks, I used a few different power calculators to come up with 650W/40A 12V rail being my requirements, so the 700W/50A 12V rail PSU I have should be just fine 😀

You have quite a collection of GPU's there- do you think I could still find the Radeon 5870 somewhere? And do you find 1 GB of VRAM to be enough?

Well, the minute I get my 775Dual VSTA I'm gonna pop a Q6600 inside it and order an HD 5850 to go along with it. Should make for a nice upgrade from my current old-school build with a P4 and 7600 GS.

Sadly, only 4CoreDual series supports Quad Cores 🙁

Yes, I've found that "lifetime" warranty quite useful. I'm impressed with the HD 5870 scores, it looks like Radeons still perform better with 3DMark (this is something that goes back generations- AMD must be optimizing them somehow.)

I see you have quite a collection of GPU's- that 4670 is of the AGP variety isn't it? I think it's the most powerful card made for the AGP port.

As far as memory is concerned, are you using DDR2-6400 or DDR2-5300? From what I see in BIOS, I didn't know that you could use DDR2-6400 (and even when you use DDR2-5300, the system seems to be most stable when run at DDR2-4300 speeds.)

HD 5870 was based on architecture made to work with DX9(c) in mind (VLIW5 "loves" DirectX 9, because it can easy utilise all 5 ALU's at the same time). It goes back all the way to HD 2900 XT, and the first DX10 GPU from AMD.
GTX 580 was made to work best on DX11, so it isn't best suited for Win XP (also, drivers work in Radeon favour too).

Yes, all GPU's from my graph are AGP (including 4670) - which clearly isn't the fastest AGP card (it's the newest one, but not the fastest), and excluding GTS 450 and Radeon HD 5870 (duh ;P).
I don't want to go Off Topic here, but with Core 2 Duo and faster CPU's, HD 3850 will be faster.

I was using PC2 6400 CL6 at the time, actual settings (for QX at least) : LINK.
It worked fine on those settings, but I didn't game on it for hours (it was only testing setup, so no need to check if it's 100% stable).
You can use PC2 9600 in this MB, it simply will be clocked down to 667/533/400MHz (depending on BIOS settings).
Keep in mind, that this MB has ~1,9V limit on DDR2 memory without Vmod's.

Thanks, what's the "highest" Radeon card that will work on this board- 6900 series? I assume none of the 7000 series cards will work?
Also, what's the fastest AGP card that will work?

it seems like Radeon PCI-e 2.1 cards do work, as all cards from the 5000 series on are 2.1 cards, maybe even some 8000 and 9000 series cards work. Nvidia didn't make any 2.1 cards, they went straight from 2.0 to 3.0
