Mayhem is really weird. They explicitly state on their page that the Mayhem "Extreme" series of coolants are -not- compatible with PrimoChill Advanced LRT, but yet the normal Mayhem Pure Black doesn't have that warning. Sure is a confusing company. A few years ago Mayhem's coolants and dyes were temporary show use only and had to be drained and flushed very frequently.. but I went and read their page and some of their coolants are now rated for 3 years daily usage in a system with no draining. So they've changed, apparently. Gave me a chance to read up about the current state of Mayhem systems.

There is some ambiguity around coolant life span. Most manufacturers will recommend changing every 6-12months to keep your loop in top shape and clean. I swap mine out every 12 months and this works just fine for Mayhems Pastels. The one your talking about being for short term or show use only is Mayhems Aurora. This coolant contains metallic flakes that give a nice iridescent effect, particularly under UV and other strong lighting. Problem is if used long term the effect disappears quickly and can actually react with most metals in your loop causing premature failure. So always stick with the regular Mayhem coolants for day to day use.

I'm planning a retro watercooled build probably based around either Danger Den RBX or DTEK White Water blocks. Still have a lot of these old classics in my collection. Problem is most are built around socket 478 or LGA775 and honestly those make for pretty boring retro rigs. What I'd really like to do is take Socket 370 Tualatin or Socket A and give that the treatment. Even better would be a super socket 7 watercooled system but blocks for those are extremely hard to come by now.

Sounds like you're in the right place here, then. 😀

I went looking and sure enough they still have one....... here you go. K7 water cooling kit for AMD Socket-A, 1 left. 😀

I would try and email their sales department first and ask if they can actually verify they still have it in stock before buying. Although if it turns out they don't have it they'll just refund your money directly anyway.

If that doesn't work, there's always the "Extreme" side of K7 air cooling 🤣

Here's something I put together inside a case from a Dell Inspiron 660 tower that suffered from motherboard failure last year, I thought it was time for a separate Windows 10 desktop so I figured I may as well use that case to build one, After all I've always wanted to build a modern computer inside an older black Dell case (except I always imagined using a midnight grey Dell Dimension (1100-3000) case but I didn't have one available for this build, maybe for my next build).

Specs:
Case: Dell Inspiron 660 MicroATX Mini-Tower case w/ Black front panel
PSU: EVGA 430W ATX Power Supply
Mobo: ASUS H110M-A/M.2 MicroATX
CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 @ 3.7 GHz (LGA1151 w/ stock heatsink)
RAM: 8GB Corsair DDR4-2133 SDRAM
Disk Drives: 250GB WD Blue M.2 2280 SATA Solid State Drive (Boot), 1TB 7200RPM WD Blue SATA Hard Drive (Data)
Misc Drives: ASUS SATA 24x DVD-RW Drive, and the internal 3-in-1 SD Card Reader

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I replaced the case's old USB 2.0 front headers with USB 3.0 headers I took out of an Anker 3.5-inch drive bay bracket, I currently don't have a picture of the open front cover on hand to show it though, but the layout is identical to the original front panel except the ports are now blue instead of black.

There are some future plans for it (getting a better PSU, More RAM, a Kaby Lake i5, and using a better heatsink).

Hah sweet! Nice job. I see you're using the same white DVD/RW drive as I am. Lootks great, though might want some front panel USB ports... get a 5.25" one off eBay and spraypaint it. Rustoleum has a nice beige-ish color Navajo White

Did ya order yours off ebay for like $15 as well? Guy had a bunch of em. Oh ya the USB is a pain ATM. I ordered a Enermax beige one off ebay that should do the trick and be around the same age as the case 😀 Im plenty happy with front usb 2.0 vs 3.0 ports. The downside to the blower style GPU cooler is fan noise, but the plus side is that case airflow doesnt matter as much. So there really isnt a noise difference from it being in a modern case with good airflow.

It's a nice build but my only complaint would be the inadquate airflow for those parts. That's largely why the industry moved -AWAY- from these sorts of cases and in to cases with large 2x120mm, or 2x140mm or even 3x120/140 fans in the front. Modern components really need -significant- airflow through the system to remove the heat fast enough. I would guess this system in general is likely running roasty hot. What are your typical gaming temps for the video card in there? If it's 80c or above for the gpu that's terrible for the RX 480's.

Motherboard and such is usually around 36-40C while the RX480 sits around 80c playing stuff like Mass Effect Andromeda or anything super stressful. The fan spins up and it just stays at 80. The CoolerMaster Haf XB it was in was roughly the same, just the GPU fan now needs a couple hundred extra RPM to keep the temps down.

I admire your dedication, but personally I would not have new hardware in old cases. Its your stuff, you paid for it, but i'm going to reserve the right to say "i told you so", if something were to go wrong.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Eh, the temps havent even changed that much. When the GPU gets hot the Noctua's pick up the pace and even it out. True there is not as much airflow flowing over the GPU, but it's been a hot running SOB since I bought it at release. The reference 480 cooler is garbage that seems to be barely adequate. Believe me, I had my reservations and wouldnt dream of doing the swap with an actual non-blower style video card. I did some research online and it seems that 80-90c is just the normal operating range, with around 45-50c idle.

My Beigelake build has a much smaller GPU in the GTX745 so that's not really an issue. My 6700K however, idles a bit higher than room temperature (20-25C) and doesn't get above 60C under full load. So if you have adequate fans, cooler, thermal paste, a somewhat cold room, and plenty of empty room inside your case it should be fine. Perhaps consider one of those GPU fans that fit into a PCIe slot.

Like one of the above posters said it entirely depends on the components you choose when doing old cases like this. If one wants to do it and use a high powered modern GPU, it absolutely would have to be the "blower style" that exhausts heat out the back of the case. An aftermarket style gpu that just dumps heat into the case and depends on case airflow to work wouldn't work in there.

So.. just depends on the parts you choose. Although they do make 80mm Radiators. I have toyed with the idea in my head of a retro system like this and 2 x radiators in front intake and rear exhaust and make a water cooled modern system in an old case like this might be fun some day.

I have a dual 1366 system with 3.6ghz cpus 48gb of ram and a titan in a oldish beige case, I never once had a problem with sound or heat, just have to find the right case. In my case (no pun intended) it takes 80mm and 120mm fans.

Too bad it's an old aprils fools story... I'd definitely be in the market for a modern case in beige color if such a thing existed 😀

Ok so it's a server case from 2005-2008. But that's about as new as it gets.

Yep, I have a few beige UPS's from 2009-2010, server stuff was made in beige up until about 2009.
so its not all to hard to find something that's still usable today.

Its abit of a sleeper. 6 SSD's in raid 10, a 780gtx, 48gb of ram and two 4core 3.6ghz Xeons. Stuff all that in a old beige case with a beige CRT and keyboard, well no one will think its anything worth anything. Oh and its running Vista and doesn't have a power switch but a circuit barker on the back 🤣

Way overkill for me, but why not, I have only about 500$ in the system. Most of witch was the case/psu and SSD's. 1366 server stuff is cheap and 5 years later I'll still have the system. I really only need the power of a P4 so yeah... You can call me Tim Taylor all you want.
