There was recently some discussion about performance between GeForce2 and GeForce3 series. I was testing a few cards today and wanted to compare these two cards for myself. The system is totally not period correct, it's meant for testing and getting good performance out of the systems.

Used is a GeForce2 GTS and a regular GeForce3.

3DMark2000: 9582 vs 12615
3DMark2001: 4692 vs 9060
Expendable 1600x1200: 32 vs 85
Drakan 1600x1200: 36 vs 49
Evolva 1280x1024: 31 vs 56
Unreal II 1024x768: 15 vs 39
Quake II 1600x1200: 79 vs 163
Quake III 1600x1200: 43 vs 102
Serious Sam 1280x1024: 36 vs 60
RTCS 1280x1024: 22 vs 50

Test System
A64 4000+
2GB RAM
XP SP3
ForceWare 71.89

So in many tests, with a fast CPU and at high resolution, the GeForce3 is significantly faster.

Sorry phil, i really like your bench/test but this time your results are ‎fictitious...
ForceWare 71.89 are too new.
From my experience 5x.xx series and up performs really bad with dx7/8.0 engine and lower.
In particular with these two GeForce and games.
Imho this is only my opinion but if i were you, i would try an older driver version

You compared 32mb card vs 64mb card again? If that's the case, then this results are not valid.

I use them so I can test a wide range of cards with the same driver and also newer games. It's all part of a much larger project and I just shared the results for these two cards.

Of course, the cards come with different amounts of memory.

Not valid then. Some of this results are VRAM limited and it's comparison of apples and oranges.

That's exactly what it is, newer cards just happen to come with more VRAM. It is what it is.

Except it's not, even some GTS cards were produced with 64mb VRAM.

Exactly, some cards didn't. But many cards did. You can only compare cards with the same amount of VRAM, that's fine. And I compare any type of card that falls into my lap.

Correct, I own a GF2GTS 32 MB which I bought new. I could choose between 32 and 64 MB, but the 64 MB one was nearly double in price, so I cheaped out 😀
Of course, the GTS is not the top model, there's the Pro and Ultra above it.
The original GF3 is not the top model either (well, it was at launch), but it was quite close to the later Ti500.

The original argument was a GF2Ultra with 64 MB vs the original GF3.

Exactly.

With VRAM limited resolutions/settings, which make such comparison pointless.

Why pointless? If I'm wanting to see how these two cards perform in the same system, this information is very valuable to me.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Quite disappointed with the responses. Others have shared results, but I haven't seen such backlash, might be something to think about, maybe you have a personal issue that needs addressing.
