I have a point of sale machine here that has a riser slot but the thing that plugs into it is just com ports and 12/24 volt usb, not an actual riser that gives additional pci slots. Will a single pci device plug in ok? The reason I haven't already tried it is because I'm going to have to cut a hole in the case to fit any type of card in, there's a bit of metal that's too high to allow a pcb of a card in.

Sounds reasonable.... I would think generally if it looks like a PCI slot and is in a spot that (in another case) you might be able to fit a PCI card, I would expect it is a PCI slot you could put whatever PCI card in.

Out of interest, are you able to post a picture?

If you are like most retro collectors, I suggest you take a sacrificial modem (of which you may have many) and try it out.

"sacrificial modem" made me chuckle.

But seriously though, they grow like mold. I have like 10 I have no use for. I've begun sticking them in my towers just to get them out of my sight. 🤣

I'd take them off your hand as I am looking for some good modems. I'm weird and only have one PCI softmodem.
