Does anyone know this game? You control a hover tank in a space virtual reality, I remember play it as a demo.
Are you referring to Battlezone (aka Battlezone 98 aka Battlezone 98 Redux)? I'm not sure that it's a hover tank, but it's a tank in space, and there can't be that many games that fit that description, can there?

The game is from 1998, but a remake called Battlezone 98 Redux was released in 2016.
It was a DOS game, it looked bit like arcade, with 256 colors.
