Too bad I don't have a CPU to test it with. The BIOS battery is most likely dead since it's one of those dreaded integrated batteries.

Very nice find - will you buy a cpu to test it or keep it as an oddity?

If I can get a CPU for reasonable price I plan to test it.

Talking about Socket 4.

3.3V VRM and cache module for my Digital Celebris Socket4/5 board that I normally use as a S4 testbed. Now it works with S5 Pentiums too. Not that I don't have other boards for them, but these parts are really interesting and make the board more complete. Funny little (ok, not that little) thing, you have to build new paths for power if you switch sockets, the 3.3V VRM entirely blocks Socket 4 and the little 5V bridge won't let you use Socket 5. Cache is not fool proof, you have to be careful.

Thankfully it works with standard AT PSU.

For over a year a coworker of mine has been telling me about an old computer he has had for several years that was his uncle's. He finally gave it to me two days ago. I had high hopes for a 386 or 486 since it is in an old AT tower with a turbo button AND an LCD readout, but it ended up being a rather basic Pentium 200Mhz (non-MMX) AT system. It is a fairly decent retro gaming build all on its own though, honestly.

It came with a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 S3 Virge 2MB card with an audio output for the optional MPEG decoder, almost identical to the one in this thread: Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 PCI Virge 86C325 VGA card, quick test

It had a Sound Blaster CT2940, sadly not the one with the Yamaha OPL3 (I already have one of those), but these are still nice cards.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-586HX Rev. 1.56. Looking it up, it seems like a decent board... I even found some crazy website describing how to mod the poor thing to accept a K6-2 350. 🤣

The case is a little grungy and there's a bit of rust on the back, but the front panel is pretty neat looking. It definitely needs a good "retro-brite" treatment though... its quite yellow.

Give it a restoration and post the results over in System Specs!

When I get a chance to clean it up, I think I'll do that!

I almost forgot, it came with a serial mouse, a very filthy (but hopefully salvageable) Chicony DIN keyboard and an Optiquest Q53 (I think?) monitor with a date of 1997 on it. Haven't tested any of this stuff out yet. Hopefully it all still works. 😀

That case reminds me of the one I had for my PII and later my PIII system, I love it. I wish I could find more cases like that hereabouts..

My buddy at the recycling center put some systems aside for me. I knew I was going to get lucky today when I had pulled over and saw this:

Two of the systems are P4s, but then there was this beauty:

Yes, that's a loose CPU rattling around inside there:

Hopefully she fires up:

Nice find! I like the badge

Also, it seems pretty common to find 486 CPUs dislodged in these old recycled systems. One of my recent finds had the CPU rattling around as well (luckily pins on 486 are easy to bend back).

A witching power supply, that's exciting 😁

The entire system may run on magic.

Just look at what happened when he dared to touch it.

That's just how was the socket 2 which was quickly discontinued because intel changed some features for the pod. 'Not sure if a normal overdrive will work in this. Most socket 3 are fine for pods anyways

What's your limit?
I had one to give away BUT some doofus destroyed the "alignment pin" which indicates the right way it goes into the socket. A second one is missing it entirely... wonder who destroyed these two specimen of an already small pool.

Such a cool board. These sockets look like MDRAM sockets on Tseng ET6000/ET6100 cards, but I don't think I've ever seen cache chips like this.

Aren't those pins quite easy to fix if you can solder? I really don't want to spend more than 20€ on a CPU for a board I'm not sure works.

From a recent haul last week, I pulled this lovely 7600 GS out of an otherwise ordinary tower.

7kN6Q4Ql.jpg

Working nicely as an upgrade to an FX 5200 in my P4 machine. Finally getting smooth frame rates in Unreal (gold) at max details and 1280x1024.
