Im gettin the error:

illegal command: win

while trying to install adobe photoshop from 1997. Running Windows XP.
But when i run it normally i get the error saying that the system file...
not suitable for running dos...

How can i get this to work?

Sounds like either the program is corrupted or it requires Windows.

Doesnt run in windows either (not xp anyway)

Run it in win 95 or 98 mode.

95 mode or 98 or NT or 2000 - none work, still get the same error. (on windows that is)

Exactly what does this have to do with Dosbox ?

Because the original poster was trying to run it in both DOSBox and the NTVDM. But since it seems to be a Windows program:

"95 mode or 98 or NT or 2000" - so far as i could experience B. Gates just put them in XP for the completeness' sake. I never could experience any change in any apps behavior clicking on them. They seem to be dummy settings 🤣
