Very good song indeed, but I always have the impression that FM music sound best with anime-like songs or Japanese game soundtracks.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

I found this one recently, on the Crossfire Designs page: https://youtu.be/nfOxZI36xxE
Made in a tracker called Easy AdLib. Never heard of it. I really like how it sounds though.

I suppose I should post a few of my own works in this thread since it seems to fit the theme.

Everything I've posted in this thread is an OPL2 (YM3812) composition/arrangement. For the recordings, however, I've captured the S/PDIF output from an OPL3-based AWE32.

Sorry for raising this from the dead, but could I please ask how you recorded this in more detail? As you say, the Genpei War music is very impressive. It almost sounds like there's stereo and reverb going on there somehow, despite the OPL2 being mono (as far as I know).

1. Where did you manage to find the original game (Genpei War)?
2. Did you record it by simply running the game and recording from S/PDIF out?
3. What are the specs of the machine you ran it on?
4. Any extra effects or processing applied?

Thank you!

If you did not know, then there was an IBM sound card using four-operator synthesis (actually analogue to YM2151). This has never been widely distributed because it was deemed too expensive. Silpheed and Space Quest 3 were among those who supported it.

The initial poster didn't specify if we should count modern OPLx/OPNA/etc-compatible music as well, so for now i'll assume that's a yes.
This person's entire channel is full of various nice OPL2/OPL3 compositions: https://www.youtube.com/user/Dark0Lord7/featured?app=desktop
Also rather impressive and full sounding OPL3 track made by a friend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wIS5elxBI0
Not sure if a shameless self-plug is okay, but here we go i guess, a collab i did over a year ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSmqN6iP_lE

Some of my favourites on the Sega Genesis' YM2612/YM3438 are the soundtracks of Sonic 3 & Knuckles (especially Angel Island Act 2, Hydrocity Act 2, Ice Cap Act 1, Special Stage, and Balloon Park) and Ristar (all the tracks are very well arranged for the Genesis' FM synthesizer, especially Splash Down! and Ice Scream, Crying World is quite interesting in terms of composition and use of the sound to create its atmosphere). SEGA did a really good job capturing the music style of Disney and mimicking acoustic instruments on Stage 1 of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. Some tracks from Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2 are also interesting, like Stage 2 (interesting subtle modulations for long sustained notes, also notably no hit-hats). Perhaps the best song I've ever heard on the YMF262 on DOS was the theme of San Francisco and New York from Mario is Missing!, though it is more like well balanced than technically impressive (it does sound better on the MT-32). Then there's the Yamaha DX7.

The demo songs of the AdLib Gold are pretty impressive.
Here's my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5HCwY8odxc

It is nice, but not OPL3 only. The percussions are PCM, AFAICT .

One of my favorite FM synth tracks is Transon from Tyrian's final level.

Nostalgia hits hard whenever I hear that one.

One of my favorite OPL2 music is from "The Whale's Voyage", composed by Hannes Seifert. There is a (jukebox in the root directory of the game)

The intro music from "Amberstar" is great, too.

The theme song of Coktel Vision's Fascination (Amiga version): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehz2rn2rnzA
I never played this game (I've heard its a pretty bad game) btw but the theme song is great! Strong core melody and rockin' bass going on there!

Dynamite Headdy for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive is very good.

I was gonna say, the Genesis, which uses a YM2612, had some great tracks... Streets of Rage 1/2 stand out to me.

I always thought that Transport Tycoon had impressive FM synth music. Now I know why. Recently, I stumbled upon this interview by John Broomhall, the original composer for that game. He explains in detail how the music was created. I found this bit particularly interesting:

John Broomhall wrote:

I’d already learned that writing on better sounding soundcards and then downgrading to a basic Soundblaster or AdLib card was much tougher than going the other way, so I started out on the humble FM cards and, once the tunes sounded as good as possible, I set about upgrading them for the Roland’s LAPC-1 and for their General Midi flagship card, the SCC-1. Then, because the other so-called General Midi soundcards of the day, from Turtlebeach to Gravis Ultrasound, were all slightly different, I tweaked and finessed a separate version of the midi files for each and every one of the main players.

The entire interview is a great read, and I highly recommend checking it out.

Since this isn't limited to only OPL devices, then check out stuff from the OPM (YM2151) and OPNA (YM2608) found mostly on arcade machines and Japanese home computers (X68000 for the former, PC-9801 for the latter).

IMO, they're substantially different (and a huge improvement) on most of the music we hear via OPL devices on the PC.
