I recently acquired 2 Sound Blaster 16 cards (CT1740 DSP v4.11 ASP/CSP and CT2740 DSP v4.11) and a Yamaha DB50XG Daughterboard for GM/XG games or MIDI files. I've installed the CT2740 with the DB50XG board in my Packard Bell Pack-Mate 28 Plus, and I can honestly say, it sounds amazing.

Specs of the card:
Creative Labs CT1747 Bus chip (integrated FM Synthesizer with the bus for the IDE port) <-- no Illegitimate hanging note bug, yet has the Legitimate hanging note bug (very rare occurrence)
ASP/CSP Socket for the ASP/CSP processor
Jumpers, jumpers everywhere. Thanks to PhilsComputerLab for posting this document: Jumper Settings of Sound Blaster Audio Cards - PDF
Volume wheel (potentiometer) for controlling the volume for the line-out, which can be disabled by bypassing the amp completely and using software to control the volume levels, which is nice (see the link above about the jumpers).
Line In and Mic ports
Joystick/MIDI port
WaveTable Header <-- Yamaha DB50XG installed
40-pin IDE CD-ROM Drive port (great for older PCs that only have 1 IDE port for the HDD via the I/O controller card or as a backup alternative if the integrated IDE fails)

I have placed the MPU-401 address from 330h to 300h since I have keropi's Music Quest MPU-401 card installed in my computer for MS-DOS games and Roland MT-32 support. Going to install my Aztech Sound Galaxy NX Pro in my Packard Bell again after changing the jumpers for the IRQ, Main address, DMA, and joystick.

Hi!

Sounds nice!

Is the SB16's MPU-401 required to use the Yamaha?

It is required, yes. The Wavetable is connected to the MIDI/Joystick port.

bjwil1991, What steps did you take to install the CT2740 card? I just got that card myself but I am not having luck getting it installed.

Firstly, make sure you don't have any other sound cards that use IRQ 5, DMA 1, I/O 220h, 200h-207h (gameport), and 330h (MIDI). There are jumpers on that card (see the first post with the link for the jumpers) that allows you to change the Base I/O address, IRQ, enable or disable the joystick and MIDI port (1 jumper each), amplification (poteniometer wheel), and MIDI port address (300h or 330h).

Another thing that's required would be to download the Sound Blaster 16 drivers from either Creative Labs website, or on the Vogons Driver Database. Run the Install program from the Sound Blaster 16 install folder/diskette, it'll ask if you have Windows installed (or populated automatically), then, it'll ask you what the IRQ/DMA/IO/MIDI addresses are (DMA is setup by software instead of jumpers, whereas the rest is on the sound card itself). Once the installation is done, it'll ask you to restart your computer. I recommend a WaveTable DaughterBoard (if there is one being sold online), or an external MIDI module will do as well for the General MIDI. Note: this card has either a Type 1, Type 2, or both bugs (if it has the CT1747 chip on there, it's the Type 2 bug (extremely rare occurrence)).
