This tantalum capacitor went out with a loud bang during first power on. It's placed where I can't get to it without great effort.

Luckily the voltages still read perfectly fine so I guess I will pretend it diddn't happen. Not that this Compaq Desk Pro works, it halts at one of the first POST codes. The ESDI/floppy controller card has a shorted tantalum capacitor somewhere but that isn't the reason for the system halting as it isnt in there any more.

The huge full hight HDD did spin up without any nasty noise when I tested it outside the system, a (thankfully) through hole resistor went up in smoke though... lots of smoke so thats also a bit of work.

This system will have to go in the "later" pile. It has to be at the bottom as it would crush anything under it...

Yeah most components in a PSU are just for decoration, anyway. 😁

I'm testing and sorting systems, i808x - i486 desktops to be more precise. Once tested the systems get stacked so I have room for the next load I will pick up this Saturday.

Once in a while I find something that needs immediate attention, here is an example.

Uuuhh! This dosn't look very good...

Even the screws are rusty so this system seems to have spent some time out in the open...

The solder pads for the battery came of when I desoldered it and the solder mask in the "battery corner" is gone but the board is fully working, a last minute save!

Received the ready built AT2XT keyboard adapter that I bought today and set about experimenting with my IBM 5160 motherboard. I don't currently have a HDD for this (or a case for that matter) but booted into MS-DOS 3.21 from Floppy and played around with some software from various disks. It's working nicely, but it's going to need some extra parts to get up and running properly.

Keep an eye on ebay for the hard disks. I know someone who is about to dump a batch on ebay for 9.99 opening bid.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Well, I'm making copies of software and OS on some NOS Floppies I've managed to get hold of using a 486, but I've also been reinstalling Windows 10 in a 20 year old case after fitting a 2TB HDD and a Front Panel if that counts, plus burning a DVD image of the Windows Enterprise Evaluation for my son, I've no idea why he wants to play with that but if he learns something that's great.

Too much.......prepping to move sometime in the not too distant future....

- Preparing the Dell Pentium 4 again, now it's a complete working system with 1.44M Floppy, DVD-RW, NVIDIA 5200 or 6200 (can't remember) video card (AGP), 3GB of RAM, 160GB SATA HDD. Pretty much up and running now with it's Windows XP Home x86 install that came with it new and ready for a new home.

- Had a friend who wanted a reliable DOS gaming rig for LSL/Kings Quest/Space Quest/Police Quest/The Need for Speed, thought my Gateway 2000 P5-100 would be a good candidate, well, I guess not, the motherboard on that thing is flaky as heck, wanting to POST, but I think it may have also been murdered by a set of ATA hard disks that somehow died while I was not using them in my 486.

- So I had to toss a 20GB, 40GB, and 80GB drive, now I'm sourcing a pile of 80GB drives from somewhere......oh joy. Want them for my 486.

- I'm also tempted to bid on a lot of motherboards that includes a Socket 3 and 3 Socket 7s untested for $30.00......so I can outfit the Gateway with one of those instead for my friend's custom gaming box.

- I've been cataloging ALL of the hardware I have.....jeebuz, I've got a ton of stuff.......this is everything I have that I've got to figure out if it stays or goes....straight from my textfile list...this is not everything.....

And that's about 90% of what I have to deal with there - what for spares for 486, what to let go of.

Then there's the 286. Trying to decide weather to keep that one or let it go since I don't use it very much anymore, and it does stuff my 486 already does (though it does a very good XT emulation via the turbo switch but my Tandy 1000A has that covered).

so just lots of sorting and decisions going on, my man cave looks like a wreck ATM.

A bit of an odd one, this: I tried to emulate Game Boy under DOS on Toshiba T3200SX. Don't judge. Thought it would be cool.

Tried no$gmb3 and vgbdos88. However, the first one is molasses slow (processor is 386SX clocked at 16MHz, apparently not enough) and the latter one hangs and doesn't do anything (not sure why yet).

Bootstrapping my bootstraps...

Wanted to get my 486 running DOS, but no luck with CF cards formatted/copied under Window 10. So decided to get Win98SE installed on my oldest system to help. Unfortunately my oldest system at that point was a Dell D610 laptop, which was already PCIe based and despite rumours that you could get it running, I got the dreaded 2 pci.vxd buses error with the Intel chipset drivers - and no working USB.

So procured an even older system, a Tualeron 1400 that definitely could run Win98SE. But couldn't boot from USB, and all (both) my optical drives are either SATA or USB. Todo: get PATA DVD drive. But worked around issue by grabbing an Atom 330 mITX board that could boot from my USB CDRom drive. Win98 install failed almost instantly as it didn't recognise the USB CDRom, but I had DOS and ebd.cab, so extracted sys.com and got io.sys, msdos.sys and command.com onto the CF. Then booted into WinXP, copied the rest of the installation files from CD onto CF and installed windows on the CF.

End result: I now have a working Win98SE install on Tualeron 1400. This evening I'll see about getting my smaller CF card into a shape that the 486 BIOS and I/O controller find bootable...

Seems like very little room between the drives for airflow... how are temps?
