well I liked either A or B 🤣
C I thought it had louder percussion sounds and generally it seemed to me that some samples are more emphasized than others

I will agree that C isn't perfectly balanced, but in the particular case of the first set of recordings, it seems to be the best match for the Roland balance, if I'm not mistaken. A and B seem to differ significantly from Roland at the beginning; the balance between the saxophone and other brass seems a little off. Someone with ready access to Roland devices will have to confirm. That file is usually included as one of their demo tracks, if I'm not mistaken.

I have made some quick recordings of the midis that 640K!enough used , used a SC-55 MK2 and an auzentech x-fi , no effects or processing other than audacity's automatic AMPLIFY value to bring them all to the same level

hi, just to be sure:

as the M29F800 SOP44 chip has to be programmed, do we program
" Gravnocd.rom - ROM file that will be written to the EEPROM" on it, is it that file ? It comes in the PNPMAP folder in the proto2.zip file. Or do we have to get it somewhere else?

^ nope, Gravnocd.rom serves another function - you don't have to worry about it as argus will write it when you run the included programs on the PNPMAP folder.
29F8000 needs data that are not included in the proto2.zip since they are still copyrighted... you need to dump the sample data from your authentic GUS PnP and use that

As already mentioned, that is not the file you need. If you don't have another source for the official sample data, this file that I posted some time ago contains a partial, but usable, instrument set for testing. I can also provide a newer file with as many instruments as I can fit into 1 MiB at 8-bit quality, but lacking any patches that I know to be copyrighted, if there is some interest in that.

Thanks for taking the time to record those. We're obviously not getting that close to Roland quality or balance, but I don't think the results are terrible, either. I already knew there was more work to do on the instrument set.

Or you get the Original ROM from UTSource: https://de.utsource.net/itm/p/457141.html
I bought it just to see if it was programmed. And it came with the right ROM content. (I own a Gravis Ultrasound PNP and compared the dumped content).

That's interesting and good to know.
Thanks for going that route.

It's interesting that apparently nobody thought to try that before now. The ROM daughterboard is more fun anyway 🤣 .

I wonder if mere possession of the ROM is enough to grant entitlement to use the sample data. I would guess not.

Excellent find moturimi1, thanks for sharing!

I ordered all my parts last night and decided to order that IC from UTsource too, so when it arrives I'll be able to provide further verification that the contents are good. I will have a set of EEPROMs too and an adaptor for my old Willem programmer so I can test any custom ROM data.

Will post updates when assembly begins 😀

Cheers!

Shock helped me to compare the check sum of my dump. My dump and the ROM from UTSource has the same content.
Good thing: The ROM is cheaper now.

I am really interested in 640k's daughterboad. Looking forward to it. I am so addicted to non conventional wavetable sound cards.

Currently ivestigating the Ensoniq Soundscape Family. Maybe there will be some news in the future, maybe on the homepage of another vogons member who helped me to solve all open questions with his programming skills.

Just briefly discussed the IW78C21M1 with a few friends. Gonna send one off to a friend to confirm it's a maskprogrammed chips who also did the silicon shot of the InterWave die.
That should really confirm whether all IW78C21M1 come preprogrammed or if moturimi1 was "just lucky".

I bought some yesterday, I guess we'll know in 2-3 weeks 🤣

Some news:
-------
-17:13:26- (ZrX-NoMs) Sent two InterWave dies to a US guy who's gonna image them using automated setup.
ZrX also agreed on cracking open an IW78C21M1 to check for the tech used to confirm whether we were lucky or if the chips are actually factory programmed.
