Probably one of the most durable media storage systems I've ever encountered..
Sadly not much out there about them ..
they came in various capacity the most useful /convenient being the 650mb discs.
The discs came with preformatted sectors ..in a plastic enclosure which only opened when in use..the disc surface being delicate and not to be handled.
The forerunner of CD ..it used a Magneto Optical system to write and read data...thus the drives were complex.
They came in two flavours ..sscsi and ide ...and most often used for system backup ..like a DDS tape drive.
..though you could write media files to them with the right software ..like backup exec ..back in the win98 days.
What _is_ impressive about these discs is the data retention/degradation factor ..
I have yet to find ANY data loss after 20+ years..
you can't say that about die based CD.
The drives and media were ridiculously expensive...and probably the main reason it didn't catch on.
certainly too expensive for domestic use.
So ..I have only one scsi version ..and 2x ide pdcd drives ...and only 7 discs.
nonetheless ..it is a most impressive system ..and the drives also read an write standard CD..
The overlap period I guess.
