A 15” MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013. Core i7 4960, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz, 2GB Geforce GT750m graphics, 512GB SSD. I would love to build another gaming PC again after parting with my previous one, but to be honest I doubt I’d use it much!

Rocking a i7-2600 @ 3.4Ghz, 16GB DDR3 @ 1333Mhz, 120GB Kingston SSD, 1TB WD HDD, ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB.

Plays all games 60fps @ 1080p. I'm happy. I've had this system minus the SSD, extra 8GB RAM, and the 1060 since late 2011. Modern PCs are so boring, 🤣.

I'm sure your system is perfectly fine. I also have an older PC that is nearly on-par with my current use system and it was built in 2010. In fact, we can start a discussion somewhere else about how the whole "you have to upgrade your PC in 2 years" idea has gone in the trash now with PC CPU architecture and OS software and deployment being the way they are now, things have leveled off. For example, my last system that still runs today and is still powerful:

some off-name mid-tower ATX case
Intel Core i7-860 "Lynnfield" 2.8GHz (will be OCing to ~3.4-3.5 GHz once I watercool it)
MSI Big Bang Trinergy LGA-1156
16GB DDR3-1600 (4x4GB, direct OC from 1333)
Galaxy GeForce GTX 480
eVGA GeForce GTX 480
Samsung 850 EVO 256GB AHCI SATA SSD (mb limits data speeds to SATAII ~270MB/s)
Western Digital 1TB Blue 5,400 RPM AHCI SATA HDD
Windows 10

And it's still a beast of a gaming system except for the last few years of games having to run at less than maximum @1920x1080. And I recently acquired matching EK waterblocks for the two graphics cards. I just need to earn the money to pick up the EK P360 water cooling loop kit to cool the CPU and I'll have a full loop. I even mocked up an image of what it could look like:

And I can tell you right now if you don't game, you can get perfectly good performance use out of a Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM, as I rebuilt an old Windows Vista machine into a Windows 10 system by upgrading the RAM to 4GB. I just wish I had thrown in a small boot SSD for him before I sold it. Even at SATAII speeds (~300MB/s) the SSD is loads faster at booting and loading programs.

Especially with the Corsair H110 this CPU should overclock easily -- but it doesn't. I suspect it is because of the large quantity of ram so I just end up leaving it at stock.

If you want you can upgrade to Middleton's BIOS and remove the WiFi whitelist + enable SATA II speeds. Plop an SSD in there and bump up the processor to a T8300 and it'll run better.

It can actually do all I want from this computer, and faster than any Win7 installation. I was not a fan of Win8/8,1 and I simply can not stand the look and feel of Win10's user interface. Everything is working like a charm, like preparing SD cards for PI boards, editing digital photo's and do homebanking and so forth, on this machine. 😀 This is without that BIOS you linked to. Thanks for the tip though. 😀

Hi,

I'm pleased to announce my last build!!! 😁 and my current PC too. 😊
My budget 300€ and I already had these components.; hassis, HDD 1TB and DVD RW.

It's very simple, maybe with low specs for a new PC today, although more than enough for me.
In any case it can be upgraded in the future to AMD Ryzen 7 and 64GB RAM.

Finally, I found some time to install my new toy, the Xeon E5-1680 v2. This is an Octacore CPU with 16 threads and 25MB L3 cache. And it has an unlocked multiplier... It replaced my i7-4960X (I know, insanity 🤣 ). I have the Xeon running at the same clock rate as the i7 was before (4.0GHz on all cores). Result: 2 more cores, 4 more threads, 10MB more L3 cache and ca. 10K LESS temperature under Prime95 full load... Hail to the Xeon 😎

System Summary:

  • CPU: Xeon E5-1680 v2 @4.0GHz
    Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
    Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV Formula

Soundcard: Creative Labs Sound Blaster ZxR

    SSD: Samsung 830 128GB, Samsung 840 EVO 1TB
    HDD: 2x Hitachi 1TB (RAID 1)
    ODD: Samsung DVD-ROM, Samsung DVD-RW

    Case: Lian-Li PC-X2000FN
PSU: be quiet! Dark Power Pro (P10) 750W

    Monitor: Eizo FS2332
    Keyboard: Filco Majestouch-2 Ninja

I'm planning on making a fresh install of Windows 7 soon. Windows 8.x and 10 can go straight to hell, no machine of mine will ever be disgraced by an installation of any of those inferior OS. And I don't care for the end of Windows 7's extended support in 2020, this machine is "offline".

Edit:
- Added OS

And since tayyare says that C2Q is not dead I'm gonnaa to pitch in and say the Athlon XP is not dead!

My main machine has the following specs:

- AMD Athlon XP 2200+ @ 1.729ghz
- 2.5gb of DDR (1x 512mb DDR400, 2x 1gb DDR333)
- Nvidia Geforce FX5200 128-bit (128mb of vram)
- MSI KT4 Ultra mobo (Socket 462, VIA KT400 northbridge)
- 320gb Maxtor 7200 RPM IDE hard drive
- Powerlink 350w full ATX power supply
- Creative CT4740 PCI sound card
- NEC DVD-RW/CD-RW combo IDE ODD
- Panasonic IDE 3.5" FDD
- Beige Antec case, not sure of it's origin

as well as an AOC 7Vlr CRT (1024x768 @ 85hz)

.... running Windows XP SP3 of course! (Windows 7 doesn't boot at all, Vista's too unstable, 2000 doesn't support enough stuff, Linux can't run games)

It's a nice machine for me, faster than I thought it'd be... it's the newest/fastest custom machine I own. Oddly enough, I do own newer OEM machines (Pentium M/Celeron M laptops, and an Athlon 64 3000+ Packard Bell) however this is fast enough and I hate OEM limitations.

This isn't really my current PC because I use other computers much more frequently. But it's certainly my fastest PC and when it comes to getting work done (long coding session), I don't hesitate to sit down at it.

2600k@4.5Ghz
32GB DDR3
Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H
Corsair H90 with Noctua PWM fan
Sapphire Radeon 7970 Ghz Edition (photo is old with GTX 660)
a few SSDs
a seagate 2tb hdd
Asus DRW-24B1ST
NZXT case in white
Seasonic X650 gold
Asus PA246q 24"
Corsair MX-Cherry Brown keyboard
Logitech G5 mouse

I did a GPU update for modern games, mostly Witcher 3, GTA V, some Crysis 3.

Added a reference radeon 290 Hawaii, clocked at 1180/1450 core/mem on HG10/H75 cooling. Stock speed is 947/1250 for reference.
Added an Audigy 2 for Windows XP SP3

Current state of affairs:

Evga Titan SC 6gb classic
Gigabyte Z77x UD5H
Intel 2600k @ 4.3 with Corsair H90 and Noctua NF-A14 iPPC-2000 PWM
32Gb Crucial Ballistix Sport VLP
Seasonic X 650
Fractal Define S case
Noctua fans

This computer is exciting because it's an incredible bridge from the past to present. Largely in part due to its full XP compatibility.

Linux can't run games

Shure it can... Just not all games. I am running Amiga games on my Xubuntu installation, and there is steam too. As I said, it can not run all games, and so can Win10 neighter. (Xbox/Playstation-exclusives) Besides running Amiga games, I only have Frozen Bubbles installed on my machine. Though I have a more powerfull Compaq laptop somewere, wich I am only using for Minecraft. That Compaq is running Xubuntu as well. Reason for not using it as the daily driver, is that the cooling fan is really loud. 🙁

Saying that Linux can not run games, is the same as saying that Win98 can not run games, because it can not run the newest games.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
