Today I got a chance to test my AGP Sapphire HD 2600 graphics card. Oddly the fan was very noisy and the graphics card was getting really hot really fast without any load. In fact, according to the Speccy program it was above 70°C. So I dismantled the heatsink from the fan and cleaned it. Look what a mess was inside. I also put a drop of oil in the fan bearing, After the restoration the card has 40°C average. How about that...

First thing I do when I get any used graphics card (or any used PC parts, for that matter) from ebay is take it apart completely and clean it thoroughly to prevent such... undesirable behavior. 😀

Also, if you want to further upgrade your card's cooling potential, get this cheap VGA cooler from ebay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/VGA-PC-Computer-Vide … 872.m2749.l2649). I got one of these for my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to replace the rinky-dink cooler it came with. And I just checked the packaging for this cooler, and it states that it supports your card's model. Wouldn't hurt to check it out, eh? 😀

Cool. Allways nice to see that I am not the only posting Amiga stuff.

Took the CGA card I bought a while back for a spin. It works which is a good start, know I just have to figure out why it only displays monochrome. The BIOS is set to use 80x25 color so it should be good. Who knows, I don't have jumper settings for the board nor do I have a real composite cable (although a regular audio cable should do just fine). Lots of stuff to test after my new Thinkpad E485 stops fighting and accepts Linux as his new OS which has to be done first..

Went thrifting today. Hit up 3 stores nearby. Saw 2 computers -- one Compaq Evo D5S that I wasn't interested in, and a custom built AM2 w/ Sempron that I wasn't interested in. Saw several PC games, mostly just the clam shell versions of the Sims, and Spore. Didn't buy those either. Saw some interesting books, like Microsoft Word for DOS tutorials and some Adobe CS and CS2 guide books. No purchases made this trip. One day I'll find something, 🤣.

Found this OG PS2 at a local Goodwill for $10. How could I pass?
jD5Co2Sl.jpg

I have taken it completely apart, cleaned it pretty thoroughly (actually pretty clean, all things considered, except the fan), replaced the CMOS battery, and am now waiting for a big Arctic Cooling's thermal pad to replace the original, dusty, rubbery, dry one that was in it. Once I get that (along with a PS2-proprietary display-out to 5-RCA adapter, 5-RCA to HDMI converter, and a new third-party PS2 controller), I'll reassemble it, cross my fingers, and hopes it turns on (and if it doesn't, welp, oh well).

Also, any suggestions as to how to make the most out of an IDE hard drive if I were to put one in there? I mean, either I could go the high-capacity memory card route, have one - maybe two of them for all of my PSX/PS2 needs, or I could get an old, say, 20-40GB IDE HDD and stick it in there, so I could not worry about a little external card, although using an internal IDE HDD would be noisy, hot, and draw more power I would think, so I'm finding it hard to see a reason to plop in an internal hard drive into it.

Oh, and one more question. Are there any significant performance differences between the original fat PS2 models and the later slim ones?

^^ Sweet, love the big brick PS2s. GREAT system, and games for it are so ridiculously dirt cheap right now it's hard not to pick up a ton of them. Get a memory card with Free McBoot installed onto it - it's a custom bootloader for the system that lets you do all kinds of neat things. You can rip DVD games to the HDD & save wear and tear on the discs and drive. You can also play ISOs from the internet but we don't discuss that on here. 😉

There's no performance difference in the fat & slim PS2, but they have different capabilities. I prefer the fat ones. Slim consoles have a network interface built in, for example, but fat consoles can take a HDD (and the HDD kit includes the network card anyway.) If you're just playing retail games I think it's a wash.

I have some PS2 content in my latest batch of game scores, which I just moved over to the more appropriate thread.

Judging by that picture, a possibility is that the TV may not support the NTSC color burst signal. The only real way to rule that out is try the card on a different TV.

Another possibility is that perhaps having it set to 80 column color is disabling the color burst signal (as 80 column mode doesn't support it), so try setting it to 40 column color mode.

Playing more games on my new second-hand Wii. I never bothered to check what "Miis" were set up on it, because to be honest, I'd forgotten that was even a thing. Until I went to start a game that used them and *this* guy popped up.

So many questions... Why the hell can you even make a character that looks like this? Why did they decide to offer *that* moustache? Didn't anybody give one to a 14-year-old for testing? WTF Nintendo!

After a long time of not using it, yesterday I decided to dig out my Genius GM6000 serial mouse, that very often had a misbehaving vertical axis sensor resulting in the cursor only moving horizontally. After a friend of mine suggested that the reason could be due to a cold solder joint, I thought "why not trying to remake the solder points", so I took the soldering iron and with many difficulties and my shaking hand (including a burned finger because the iron slipped out of my hand, I know I'm an idiot...), I tried to put some new solder on the joints of the vertical sensor as well as some on the joints of the horizontal one, that looked a bit knackered even though the mouse was NOS when I bought it.

So far, the mouse is working well and the vertical sensor is not acting up... Yet. I also cleaned the buttons by pouring alcohol inside them and letting it dry for some minutes. So far so good.

EDIT: As I expected, the mouse stopped working once again, with the Y axis acting up. I give up.

Always happy to see others giving the Amiga some love as well. Got a gotek in the mail today, I will solder on the missing headers and flash it with the HxC firmeare for use as a df1: 😀
