Damn, you got my hopes up for second. I use nVidia's drivers on my nForce2 board, but I can use the Realtek drivers instead if I want because it has a Realtek ALC655 chip on it. I tried this exact version (A3.77) last week and found that the EAX support was buggier than in the nVidia drivers, so I switched back.

Do I dare try them? I tried the updated drivers from Windows Update once and that killed my sound pretty good, had to rollback the driver to restore it. Or are these drivers only for the newer chips?

It seems to work fine for me on my ALC650 (nForce2) rig.

@HunterZ:

I do not use EAX but the surround test seems to work fine. I have played some games without problems.

3D positional (surround) sound in games is usually done in DirectSound3D. EAX is a set of extensions to DirectSound3D that I haven't seen any good tests for.

Also, v3.78 is out but Realtek hasn't updated their readme, so I can't tell what's new yet. I think I filed a bug report with them so there's a small chance they fixed my EAX issue:
