Going down another rabbit hole. Just bought the game CD and have had no luck getting the 3DFX patches to run on my Win98 machine so now looking to
use my XP rig with dosbox. Can anyone give me some guidance on this, especially using wrappers and such in conjunction with D-Fend Reloaded?

That's because DOSBox doesn't support the Voodoo card. Maybe something like DOSBox ECE will work better for your purposes.

Just another user that likes old OSes and videogames, nothing interesting to see here...

I know it's now what you asked for, but there are at least two source ports of the game engine for Windows; DXX-Rebirth https://www.dxx-rebirth.com/, and D2X-XL http://www.descent2.de/, though they probably aren't much use for someone setting up a legacy PC.

Thanks but I was under the understanding that these source ports were for Win7 and up. At the moment I'm trying to get Glidos to work, but it needs an internet connection apparently.

The ports are a bit crufty though. Even rebirth has additive lasers. there's still a reason for running the originals as there's no 'chocolatescent'

That's why as a "backup plan" I'm putting together a Pentium 2 rig for dos only, looking out for a voodoo 1 card it's all I lack.

- Rip the CD into CUE/IMG
- Throw D-Fend out of the door. You gonna miss the fun of using DOSBox if you have to use a frontend
- Search for community DOSBox builds that include glide pass-through or voodoo1 chip emulation patch or both
- Learn to apply patches and compile DOSBox SVN

Your XP machine is more than enough to play Descent II 3Dfx. I had the same CPU with 8GB RAM and Windows 10 Pro x64. Descent II 3Dfx run at 60fps from DOSBox.

I'm old and slow with a mind like "concrete", tried messing with Dosbox variant SVN Daum for Descent 2/3dfx but just got a black screen.

May try Gulikoza & DBGL front end on a rainy day. Anyways, got Dx2-Rebirth version 0.58.1 working - it'll do for now!
