Hi.

I just finished my last build, a Quad Core CPU.
I never used a PC based on this CPU. I have been using Pentium 4 from 2000 to 2015 and after this an AMD A6-6310 CPU.
The purpose of this system is to run games that I can't run with my other build, a Pentium 4 @ 3,4GHz based PC.

CPU: Intel Xeon E5440. [2007]
Mainboard: Asus P5B.
RAM: 8GB (4x2GB DIMM).
HDD: 2x500GB (SATA II, 7200RPM).
DVD: Samsung DVDRW (IDE).
GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 280. [2008]
PSU: Enermax Maxpro 600W.
Chassis: Chenbro PC61733 (big and heavy box with two 12cm chassis fun)

The 'only' things that I bought are CPU, mainboard, RAM, GPU and power supply. I already had the rest of the components.

Why I decided for this specs?

- To continue with the CPU Intel timeline and cover the gap from Pentium 4 to the firsts Core I3 / I5.
- The PC must be a complete Windows XP compatible and works well with Windows 7.
- Since it will be dedicated to games the GPU are an important election but I don't have previous knowledge about this. Because of this I've started reading reviews in magazines, in this forum of course, wikipedia, etc and the Nvidia GTX 280 seems to be a good choice, not the better but enough for me.
- The parts are not too expensive.

In this moment I'm installing Windows XP 64 bits...

1TB SATA II added and Windows 7 installed.

This build can be my main PC 😜

But I have some dudes about Windows 7 to run games developed for Windows XP.

Not bad, I use an E5440 on an Asus P5Q in my "swiss army knife" workstation. It's a beast for LGA77x & still capable of doing just about anything you'd want out of a modern PC. It's a fairly cool-running CPU and should have some headroom for overclocking if you want to try that.

I had a GTX280 in a similar machine for a while, but swapped it out for a 750Ti for better heat & airflow. Nice card though.

Also a member of the Xeon on a 775 club.
Started out with free parts build to replace my P4 as my daily driver in 2012
MB: Asus P5KPL-AM (Given to me)
CPU: Xeon x3320 2.50Ghz (Pulled from a dead HP DL160 G6)
RAM: Whatever came with the M/B
HDD & DVD: Whatever I had lying around
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S (Only thing I had to pay for)
Onboard video and sound Running WinXP x32

It had a few upgrades as the years past and it slowly evolved to my XP Gaming PC
Sound: SB X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion
Video: 2x GF GTX590
RAM: Faster OCZ PC2 8500 5-6-6 DDR2 2GB

Then finally once it was officially downgraded to pure XP Gaming rig the motherboard was swapped out for a SLI compatible Asus P5N-D only to find out XP supports the cards but not SLI!

Yes, It seems to be done the daily tasks (office, internet, edit photos, etc) and play any Windows XP game (including emulators) but if I want to use with some security I need Windows 7 to get security updates or if I want to run the latest version of Chrome or Firefox.

By the other hand, Steam and GOG Galaxy only works from Windows 7 and above.

Is Windows 7 fully compatible with Windows XP games? or There are any compatibility game-list or something similar?

If not, there is no problem because I have other PC to cover all the 32bits era (more or less), but I prefer one PC that do it all well.

Very nice PC.
My knowledge of hardware after 2004-2005 is very limited because my main PC in those years was already obsolete.
Since year 2000 to 2013 the CPU of my desktop always was a Pentium 4.

With this build I'm entering unknown territory. 😕
