I want to get one of those so I can play my older Win9x games like Quake II, SS2, Deus Ex, etc.

Anyone have a list of these laptops? Specifically ones that have 98SE driver support also? I don't want to use XP because I also want the DOS support that 98SE has. I know some of the Inspiron 8000 models and the 8100 models have this card and 98SE support, but I can't find one in decent shape for $30-$50.

IBM Thinkpad X20 has a AGP 2x - ATI RAGE Mobility M if that's any help. And it shipped with 98SE.

That might work, but it's only a 4MB, that and I can't find one on eBay 🙁

The Compaq Evo in my signature has one, and I'm running ME on it so I'm sure you could run 98SE if you'd like, but the lack of a Sound Blaster-compatible audio codec makes it useless for real-mode DOS gaming.

Dell Latitude C800/C810/C840 and Precision M40/M50 are identical alternatives to the Inspiron 8000/8100/8200 laptops. Those might be easier to find than their Inspiron counterparts, YMMV.

Other Dell laptops worth mentioning are the Latitude C610/C640 and Inspiron 4100/4150 (the Latitude C600 and Inspiron 4000 have 8/16MB ATI Rage GPUs, so those models might not suit your needs).

If any of those Dells are hard to find, there should be some other brands that still suit your needs (like an IBM Thinkpad or a Compaq EVO).

Actually, the Dell Inspiron 8100 (and possibly the 8000) can be upgraded to a 64MB Geforce4 440 Go.

Looks like they might also be able to take an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500/9000 or an nVidia Quadro4 700 Go GL.

Okay, now this is epic. Definitely going to get one or before Christmas.

Does the GeForce4 440 Go have Win98SE drivers btw?

Now time to find one that works that isn't a ridic price.

You should be able to do a .inf mod to make stock nVidia drivers work with the 440 Go GPU (I'd recommend a driver version ranging from 40.71 to 45.23). Though the Geforce2 Go should be more common on those laptops and has official Dell drivers for Windows 9x.

My Thinkpad x24 has a P3/1133 and an 8MB(?? <-- there's conflicting info about this; some sites say 32MB) Radeon 7000. I also have a Dell Inspiron 600m (same as a Latitude D600) with a 32MB Radeon 9000. The Dell is "just barely" Win98 capable; there are drivers out there for everything but you'll have to hunt them all down yourself & maybe do a lot of tweaking. Someone on this board sussed it out a while ago. I haven't tried.

I had at least three Latitude D630s (a much newer C2D-based design) die at my old job because the Nvidia graphics chip (Quadro NVS 135M) cooked itself. It's a Tesla architecture chip, so just mentioning that; no idea if it was a problem for their earlier mobile chips.

That generation (nVidia GeForce 8000 series and the parallel Quadro models) of mobile chips had a specific, well-known and documented design/manufacturing flaw that caused abnormally high failure rates. Very few video chips before or after that exhibited similar rates.

Sorry for the spam it's been 2 years but I just want to add one to the list. Yesterday I bought a Toshiba 2805-S603 which has a Geforce 2 Go card, 16M video mem (and a Yamaha sound card which is good for DOS gaming), cost me about $50. It has WinME pre-installed and the Win98/SE drivers are provided at the official site. I just finished replaced the WinME with 98SE, and it works well.

Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 - YMF744, Savage IX
Toshiba Satellite 2805-S501 - YMF754, GeForce 2Go
IBM Thinkpad A21p - CS4624, Mobility Radeon 128

Thinkpad T40, T41 and T42 has Mobility Radeon 7500 or 9000
These are W98 compatible. The T43 is however not.

Maybe the Thinkpad R40.

Though whether you get these for 50$ really depends on where you live. I usually see them for around 50, sometimes with docking station.

High end T42 can have Radeon 9600. How's the W98 compatibility on that one?

T42p had 128 MB FireGL T2 in it.

As does the T41p. It's essentially a Radeon 9600 but with more RAM that the 64MB of the base model.
