Then it can't be DOSBOX surely? It sounds as if text only has been turned on - turn on text+speech.

Use ScummVM. It does a great job of playing those old LucasArts games on modern machines.

ScumVM is cool but I want the more authentic feeling DOSBOX myself to be honest since ScumVM alters the games a bit. I can play all Lucas Arts games in DOSBOX myself so I'd rather use that then.

Try running the game executable with the parameter s, and press F5 to bring the menu, check the options, there may be one that let you select the text and speech mode.
