I am having trouble getting Myst 3.1/MPC to work on my Windows 95 (OSR2) computer. I have made sure I have Quicktime 2.0.3 installed (wiped out the quick time files in the Myst directory), I have set my video to 256 colors and I always get a general protection fault on both myst.exe and making of myst...which sort of makes me think its a Quicktime issue. I have tried version 2.1.2 Quicktime with the same result. Is there something else I could look at / try?

I have also made sure Quicktime movies run, I opened them from the CD and played the intro in Quicktime with no issues.

Thanks!

Weren't there two releases of Myst ? One for Windows 3.1/Mac and one for Win95 ?
I'm speaking under correction here, but maybe it helps installing the right version of QuickTime (16-Bit or 32-Bit QT ?)
or maybe it helps running it under Windows 3.11 with the copy of QuickTime it shipped with.
Another workaround would be using an ET4000 VGA card. Some version of QuickTime has support for it built-in.

Hard to say... did you already try different video drivers for the graphics card?

I am using an S3 Virge DX. I havent tried different drivers...I think I am using whatever Win 95 installed right off the bat. I have TONs of games on the PC that all work, this is the last hold out really! I guess I could give it try though! I was also thinking about swapping to a different video card just to see. I installed Myst on my 98 machine and the game ran fine!

I have tried using the QT files that come with the game, installing version 2.0 and version 2.03. All of which still crash the game. I will say that I can watch the movies and in general use QT when I install the 2.0 and 2.03 versions.

by MPC you mean masterpiece? that uses 24 bit color

MPC = Multimedia PC. Its a gimmick from the 90s, but it shows up on the Myst box and I was using it to distinguish what version I was trying to use to install (my personal copy). Sorry for the confusion!

Thanks for the tips everyone! I will keep plugging away at it here and there because im just genuinely curious now!

Did you ever figure it out? Myst caused general protection fault for me as well, and I'm running Windows 3.11 but also with an S3 Virge. AFIK I am using the last version of the Virge drivers available for Win 3.11. Not sure if it is a graphics issue though, or what.
