Friend of father gave me this NEC MultiSync JC-1401P3A monitor. It is one of the first VGA capable monitors, and was ranked among the best when it was introduced in 1986.

Is the 1084 capable of displaying VGA? I was under the impression that VGA went out of its frequency range. I love the 1084, it's possibly my favorite monitor of all time. Composite, Luma/Chroma, CGA, and RGB all in the same monitor!

Eh, it's a different beast altogether and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will answer but technically it's capable of only up to 640x256 progressive so it can't do all VGA modes (640x480x16 for example) progressive, although 640x200x16 and below, including 320x200x256 is possible (Although for an Amiga you would need AGA for that). It can also do 640x512 interlaced but that's not really comparable to a real 640x480 progressive signal.
There's also that it's a 15KHz monitor so it does not natively accept VGA signal, just 15KHz RGB.
It's definitely a better monitor than the NEC though 😎

The NEC is actually a more versitile PC monitor for IBM compatibles. It does MDA, CGA, EGA, PGA, and analog video all the way up to 800x560. As much as I love my 1084, the NEC is now my go to monitor for my 286 setup. The 1084 belongs with my Commodore 128d. I have an Amiga 2000HD, but it is paired with a Nanao Flexscan F560i. Another amazing monitor, possibly the best picture quality of any CRT I've ever seen.

I got this for a few bucks. Does anybody have an idea of brand/type? Looks like a pretty early Slot A board, with onboard LAN (and sound). No markings on the back side. Haven't turned it on yet, so no further info.

Just over 10 years old now, so I figured every time I see a decent deal on "newer" stuff I'll pick it up because the price is bound to get ridiculous in the future. MSI P7N Diamond (came with a Q6700) for $30.

By the way you can fit full-height 5¼ drives in that case..

The one I have (IIRC the model is PC-7Plus black), is probably the sturdiest and heaviest case I've ever owned.

While its manufacturing date of August 2007 makes it kind-of not really retro, the underlying hardware definitely fits the bill, I think.
At my favorite thrift, they often sell old HP Thin Clients, varying between mostly VIA and Transmeta based models, but today I lucked into one I had hoped would show up there, an HP T5720, with an AMD Socket A Geode NX 1500 1GHz CPU. Essentially it's a low end Athlon XP that's been made more power efficient to run with passive cooling inside this low power machine. With its PCI slot, it could be very interesting for retro PC usage.
I think PhilsComputerLab has videos on this very model. Bonus CPU photo from when I took it apart and repasted it, too 😎

Been on the hunt for a high quality 4:3 ratio LCD monitor for my testing area. Finally found one in a local Craigslist listing for $25. It's a heavy monster, but it's in mint condition and absolutely beautiful image quality. Say hello to my new member of the family. An IBM 4945-20X T120 20.1" LCD monitor. Best lunch money I've spent in quite awhile.

I've been on the lookout for one for a while. Every time I go to RePC I see dozens of 5:4 screens and a few 1024x768 screens, but never any 1600x1200, 4:3 screens.
