Anyone have an SGI Visual 3xx ?

I presume you mean Visual Workstation 320?

... why yes I do! And the 540 (bigger brother of the Cobalt VW line) 😎

From left to right:
AAlchemy 8232 SPP (Case only 😒), Nexxus 4800 cluster (8 nodes in single case! Conroes I think), SGI 320 (Dual P3 500 Mhz) and the SGI 540 (Quad Xeon 900Mhz).

The Quantum3D is a 4U case, so that gives an idea of the size of the 540 and Nexxus! Nexxus has to be dismantled to move it (medium-iron).

Now, I don't know if this is rare, rarest, unobtanium or uncommon or what, but I suppose I could consider this one the most uncommon computer components I have and use on my system. It's a Logitech Series/2, from 1987. Apparently, it's the first third party PS/2 mouse ever released on market and the first PS/2 mouse ever made by Logitech. Aesthetically looking it's just a C7 with two buttons instead of three, but back when I bought it, it was the only one on Ebay, I had to import it from the States. Haven't seen another one ever since. Works as it should, but I have replaced the original lightweight crappy black ball with a rubber-coated steel one, and tracks way, way better. Notice the "Patent Pending" writing on the sticker on the rear...

Wow! Nice.

540, Do you mean it has 4 Xeon CPU's ? What speed ?
What graphics cards does it have ?
That 540 must be LOUD !
Is the 320 loud too ?
I had a Dual Xeon HP z800 and it was LOUD !
My Mac Pro 2012 with the same dual Xeon CPU's was NOT to loud however.

I found these photos on the internet. But they are low resolution.
It would be nice to see some high resolution photos.

AOpen AX6BC Pro II "Black Limited" - Japanese edition of the "Millennium Edition" board. Very few were ever made.

I wasn't aware this board even existed. I did know about the "AX34 Pro II", which is also a black PCBed board.
Several manufacturers experimented with different PCB colors in that era. Even a pink one 😜. It does make things a bit more interesting.

Anyway, except for my Cyrix 5x86 and maybe that IBM ActionMedia II board (which is more of an oddity perhaps), I probably don't have a lot of really very rare hardware laying around?

Well ok, I do have a couple CPU ES and even an Intel confidential Slot 1 board with 3 RDRAM slots instead of 2 (yes it worked and was unstable regardless of what I tried 🤣). Perhaps some 30p 16MB SIMMs?

I do have a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI with SGRAM?

My apologies, no pics. My stuff is packed up for now. Will change before the end of the year though 😀

I have a quad p2 in a boring beige box. nothing as fancy looking at that SGI iron.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

That Aopen Motherboard is really sweet.
What case are you going to put it in ?

It'll be a surprise, if certain companies get back to me in time and agreements happen as discussed. 🤣

Yep, 4 x SL4XY (PIII Xeons @ 900Mhz). 2Gb ram (maxed as much as it can be!).

Intel486dx33 wrote:

It doesn't, both the 320 and 540 use SGI's Cobalt graphics chipset. It's integrated into the system, takes bespoke RAM modules (prone to dying) and allows you to assign as much ram to vram as you want. Also, since it is integrated, it can copy (blit) buffers to and from GL instantaneously which makes it good for video (textures) and absolutely excels absolutely 2D performance (image manipulation etc). I used to show it off by loading massive NASA jpgs (90mb jpegs!) and being able to smoothly and effortlessly drag them and crop/paste them.

It is fully GL 1.2 compliant although 3D is CPU limited and not quite as good as it's nVidia contemporaries after about a year on market so didn't fair so well. Also the entire design team for Cobalt was 'let go' slightly before, or during launch. Well done SGI 😒

Intel486dx33 wrote:

It's like late 90's workstation loud, so not quiet, but not like server farm loud. Of course it is a workstation and designed for such. Volume wasn't top priority in those days.

Intel486dx33 wrote:

Not as loud, but you know when it is on 😉.

Will do next time I drag it out. As you can see it needs a clean. 🤣

Kaypro 10 Z-80A/4mhz/64kb ram/10mb HDD MFM/390kb FDD/ Cp/m 2.2f OS (1983)
it has even three games on it - Catchum, Ladder and Aliens - Pacman, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders clones. yep all in pseudo-graphics)
Also Pascal, C, Assembler and other languages are available for CP/m - so I hope to study it and write more gmaes for it in C.

It's not rare, neither the IBM PC 5150 (unless it is an early revision). The EGA monitor on top of the IBM PC is probably the really rare item 😉
