Hi,

I'm trying to get 7th Guest working in DOS. I have a feeling its a sound related problem. I'm using a laptop which has a ESS Maestro 2E sound chip, got the dos drivers loaded and works fine with other games. When I load the game it will play the first couple of notes, CD spins up and it will crash, black screen and nothing happens, I have to restart to clear it. The game detects the sound chip as a Sound Blaster pro 2, I've tried different options but the same issue

Any suggestions,
Dan

Faulty CD?

Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉

Hi, are you trying to run the game through windows or pure dos? Have you disabled the unneeded on board ports (serial - parallel)? What irq is assigned on the legacy settings of the card? Can you reserve in bios the common irq's used by sound cards (5,7)? Are you setting the SET BLASTER variables in autoexec.bat?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. The CD is fine, it runs on dos box on a newer machine. I'm running it in DOS Mode (Windows 98) Yes the variables are set in Autoexec, I'll look at the irq's in the bios.

Here's a link to the archived version of the tech support page from 1996

It's possible you have a VESA problem.
Also at one point there was a patch that skipped the opening video because that was causing problems.

List of patches at the archive of the old Trilobyte website"

There are patches here:

If you have Windows 98, it might be easier to run the game using the Beta DirectX patch instead of running in DOS.
