Nice. I’m a pfSense guy too. The EPYC system is of particular interest to me though - how are you liking that?

Are you running hardware raid, zfs, etc for your storage array?

FIREWALL
Yes I was worried that this pfsense wouldn't be powerful enough but for home internet or small business it seems like it would be a pretty good fit. I've only had it for a couple of weeks so still getting the hang of it. First task was to setup the VPN and block all internet access once the VPN drops. Next task will be blocking ads and tightening the outbound firewall policy.

PROCESSOR
With my C2Q I'd see spikes when transcoding with plex or doing other tasks but with this EPYC I don't see the CPU utilization budge at all so it's definetly way overkill for 1 stream or file serving. I plan to setup alot VMs for lab usage and for hosting all the online services game downloads so should see the CPU get a workout.

STORAGE
When I built my C2Q years ago I used the onboard storage but the onboard Intel controller rain out of SATA ports so I had to use the other onboard controllers. As the amount of data increased and the flakiness of the other controllers I went through tons of troubleshooting with drives, cables, power and multiple controller cards and finally identified the issue as a controller issue (although SATA cable may have been a culprit once or twice). I then went with only using an SAS controller but had to go through a couple of those since some wouldn't work with the Gigabyte motherboard. Also the SAS controller wasn't used for RAID just for connectivity.

I've been using RAIDZFS3 with FreeNAS for about a decade now and it's been pretty solid. I can rearrange SATA cables, rearrange drives, take the drives out and stick them in another computer, etc and no issues. FreeNAS will just see it. When I want to upgrade the storage I just replace each drive and wait for it to resilver and I'm done.

I heard pfSense is a pretty great firewall. It seems to be rather an operating system designed just for being a firewall and kinda like a virtual router. I'd say it's quite powerful to use.

That is really positive - I like the idea too of effectively triple-fault parity. I'm currently (still) running hardware RAID 6 on an LSI SAS2 controller, with 10TB drives. I keep threatening to do ZFS "next time" but it has yet to materialize. Back to reading up on FreeNAS then!

My edge has been pfSense for a few years now and I really love it. Relevant to this crowd: I have the retro systems completely segmented off on their own VLAN, firewalled by pfSense so that they can only harm themselves (overkill perhaps, since nobody really cares to pwn a 98SE machine these days, but still).

For compute at home I went to Docker and haven't looked back. It is awesome to move to a declarative model, tell the platform how you want things to look and watch it emerge from nothing. With young kids running around, anything that gets me spending less time on server maintenance has been a great investment.

Next need to the other desktop I built with the old C2Q from the server I upgraded. This will be used for 9x+ application and game compatibility testing.

Finally finished my test desktop I slapped together from spare parts laying around for testing Windows 9x-Windows 10 and Linux.
For installing linux or at least Ubuntu I have to slap in an ATI PCI-E card otherwise X will never boot. Once booted and the Nvidia drivers are installed then all is good.
Can't leave the ATI card in there otherwise 9x will freak out due to memory.

Well I can guarantee my test desktop is stable and I'm stopping there with the overclocking. If I dropped down to 8gb with faster memory or more likely 4GB in two slots could likely go higher but I like having 16gb of memory so it's staying where it is.

Should be receiving a YMF724 soon.

Now for DOSBox compilation and game testing. Woohoo.

I've been using a plugged in mouse and keyboard instead of my KVM with the Q9650 since when this motherboard is overclocked it resets when you plug anything into the onboard USB port. When plugged into the USB3 card then no issue but I had assumed there were no USB3 Windows XP drivers. Well I found them a couple of days ago for this Fresco card and they work great. Will have to try them with Windows 2000 next.

Even when this computer is not overclocked the Corsair K95 keyboard doesn't work in the BIOS even when plugged directly into the computer, boot speed is vastly reduced. The LEDs light up so I know it's getting power but possibly not enough or mabye a BIOS/keyboard issue.

This Corsair K95 RGB Platinum not working in the BIOS or before Windows was rebooted annoyed me so looked into it today.

You can enable BIOS mode on the keyboard by holding down F1 and the "win lock" key for 3 seconds until the scroll lock key blinks. Everyone seemed to think you should know what a win lock key is so spend forever looking for that. It's the padlock key on the keyboard.

Once you do that the keyboard works!

Unfortunately when this computer is overclocked it's almost impossible to boot into the BIOS since the keyboard isn't recognized.

To boot into the BIOS:
Power off the computer
Power on the computer
When the POST gets to the memory check press the pause key and then delete. Reboot again if you don't make it.

Well that was fun.

And if you use WPCREDIT you can surpass BX chipset mobos in your memory benchmarks. Just check out my scores!

1. Had to turn off 32b textures for G400. Rainbow textures. Weird slowdowns.

Unreal Tournament
Morpehus Practice Map. 16 bots.
57fps,29fpsFSAA/24fps

1. Could not use latest opengl from Epic or opengl from LOKI without problems. Went back to 4.36 opengl. Experienced same rainbow textures as in Quake 3. Gave up and went to D3D.
Couldn't use Directx 8 D3D.dll from Epic. Went to alternate D3D for 4.36. Ran fine but stuttered and precached.
