Does this matter if older games works best on 7800 and what about 7900?

Just curious, I'm planning to use one for XP to use older games that still works in DOS mode and that still works in XP instead of 98se?

Oh yeah, I'm still planning to build a 98se computer box for some games that will not work in XP.

Thanks and cheers,

Perfect, thank you. I knew 98se is odd in a way but this is out of the scope of this 7x00 video cards. I have hard ware set aside for 98se already but was not sure about 7800/7900 to use for XP.

For XP just grab a 7900GTX they cost the same as a 7800 or lower end 7900 these days. Better yet grab an x1900 card for similar prices but faster in everything that uses shaders and opengl was fixed by now.

What about x1950 series?

PS: I purchased:

Two Quadro FX 4500 with rigid SLI bridge as a kit for good price. This is version of GTX 7800 512MB
One Quadro FX 5500, which is like GTX 7900 except this is 1GB rather than 512MB. FX 5500 is much easier to find than 7900 GTX which is for strange reason rare. 7900 GTO is easier which I also purchased as well.

I already have 7900 GTX in storage which I purchased nearly 2 years ago when it was bit more plentiful there.

Also found and purchased kit flexible version of cross fire and SLI bridges. Hard bridges is much harder to find for 1 way SLI in any length, Needs one 40mm and one 60mm rigid SLI bridge, no need for HB type.

Not nessesarily. Most likely they will be packed with G71 chips. So it's more like 7900GT with better PCB.

Horrible choice for gaming. These cards use GDDR2 with anemic 1 Ghz clock. You'll be lucky to overclock it to standard 7800GTX memory clock (1200 Mhz).

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Both are Quadro cards I know these, and both are 256bit, GDDR3, clocked same as well (1050MHz) and is less bandwidth too for being Quadro. Same reference PCB boards like the GTX 7900 I have in storage.

G70 for Quadro FX 4500, G71 for Quadro FX 5500. Both fully enabled chips like GTX/GTO/7900 GT are. 7950 GT is not same category as it has also fully enabled chip plus 4 more features that other G70/G71 don't have.

Cross checked from wiki list of nvidia GPUs and techpowerup.

7950GT is G71. It has identical features.

I don't know why you got the DDR2 reference and I did find the AIDA64 incorrectly reports memory type as DDR2 for Quadro FX5500 which I received today and tested it.
Try GPU-Z.

BTW, GDDR2 chips is usually used on low end video cards and is totally different from bit larger GDDR3 chips.

I know that. This is reason I'm exploring alternatives of Geforce 7800/7900 cards.

Cheers,

Like others have said best alternative x1950 pro or xt

X1000 series certainly will get you nicer image quality. Better anti-aliasing and texture filtering and that floating point blending ability for HDR+AA in Oblivion (super important 🤣)

GF7 will have better overall game compatibility however.

😁 Back in the day I convinced my family to buy me a new PC because of Oblivion. E6300 and x1800GTO were not really enough for it, and only Q6700 and HD4870X2 made the game really playable for me 8 years later 😁
