Hello all,
I recently bought from eBay an original copy of the game Thexder in 3 1/2 and 5 1/4, I tried to make copies of both formats using my 486 DX2 PC and after several errors (copy protection I think) my two drives became useless/damaged, one is a 3 1/2 1.44mb and the other 5 1/4 1.2mb. I switched to my spare drives and they work just fine, so there's no motherboard or cable issue. Installed the old ones again and they just don't work anymore, the system detects them but they can't read any disk I throw at them, it just says "Not ready reading drive A" (or B), which is the same error when no disk is inserted. So both drives got damaged or blocked, is there a copy protection that can damage your drives? it sounds crazy but I saw a YouTube video where the guy mentions that when trying to copy a game (can't remember which one) the 5 1/2 drive gets stuck and it needs to be serviced to unlock it, he mentioned this can happen to very old drives, 5 1/4 360kb or something like that and newer drives (1.2 mb) are immune to that kind of copy protection.... Anyway, my floppy 3 1/2 got damaged too, (I tried to make copies of both formats). Is this mere coincidence that my two drives got damaged? is there a software of any kind or disk that can damage your drive?? it's the weirdest thing, does anyone has any idea what could've happened?
(I cleaned the headers just in case but that didn't help).
For the record:
Both drives were working with no issues and I used them periodically for the last 6 months, also the PC.
My 486 build:
Mobo: Biostar 8433UUD
CPU: 486 DX2 66MHz
RAM: 16Mb
CD-ROM and the 2 floppy drives I mentioned.
DOS 6.22 / Win 3.11
HDD: Compact Flash 2Gb (IDE to CF adapter)
Thanks for reading!!
