I have heard stories regarding tantalum capacitors exploding with the possibility of nasty side effects (other than taking an eye out). So I was wondering if it is worth replacing them on old motherboards, i.e, not with different ones but the same ones, like for like.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, I do not know much about electronic but I value some of my old boards quite a bit and if there is something that can be done to extend their life expectancy I'd love to know.

If the failure rate is high then yeah, if not then just replace those that failed. Power on your board once a while and they will be ok, as tantalum caps could self heal when heated up during operation.

Slow down your CPU with CPUSPD for DOS retro gaming.

It definitely couldn't hurt to replace them. The biggest thing with tants is watching polarity cause that'll make them shoot flames too

I would recommend photographing the motherboard first. I heard stories about motherboard not always being labeled correctly.
