You don't really see very many libretro posts here likely because it has a forum https://forums.libretro.com/

It always amazes me how people blatantly show they are using TDC and then when sites repost they don't even notice or care as well.
Someone should ask that dev if they bought the games they are demoing.

Ahh, I thought it was a frontend of some sort. If it helps more people into the DOSBox community I'm all for it.Configuration is the most difficult part of DOSBox, lowering that bar certainly will allow more people to enjoy it.Probably a portion of those will end up here for a more authentic retro experience.

Although I'm really curious how you play certain games like Abrams Battle Tank with only a controller 🤣

"Pure" seems to be a strange choice of terminology.

I guess it's nice that it supports save states? I know the patch has been around for a long time, but I really don't have any idea at the moment where people looking for a DOSBox build with save state support should look.

Libretro and Retroarch are a cancer upon the emulation development community. The fan/user community, IDK, but definitely the developer community.

PCGamer having a slow news day suddenly doing news about a libretro core doesn't mean DOSBox is over from "a cancer".

A thing to understand about RetroArch though, it has its own disc loading/dumping system and its own shader/scaler system, its own video capture system, etc. so there's definitely some DOSbox features that'll get gutted for their own adaptation instead. It's not like it's trying to upstage DOSBox with the ol hostile fork syndrome. There's been a DOSBox core for years (with its own unique issues regarding cycles, timing and refresh rates). It's more for the couch niche, not too different goals from Boxer with regards to ease.

and frankly, if it weren't for RetroArch, my Pi's would be useless and i'd have nowhere to throw my PowerVR dither/filter research into (among other things like contributing widescreen/visual fixes to a couple of game cores that I wouldn't be able to fix upstream, etc.).

-Keyboard emulation
-save states
-cheat support
-controller and joystick mapping to modern controllers
-loading games, including CD-ROM images, from zip files
-all of the other features of retroarch in regards to shaders and all of that

Looks pretty interesting. Retroarch has a dosbox core already but it is hardly worth using. For games that have joystick support I could see myself using it for my living room emulation setup.

Would be nice if booting from iso's worked in dosbox as well as save states.

Then you could just setup a boot floppy and set that as the cd's boot bin. Then have autoexec foo to load the game from the CD. Its a pita to setup but loads quick.

This works with dos7/8 and hx-dos extender. I can confirm full throttle and the Windows version of Fallout 1 loads via Hx from a CD. Then you could just save the state and reload. Otherwise you can boot a game from a cd and cant save it because Fat/joilet does not support symlinks..

Unless they state it wont crash when you suspend it im not interested. No point in making dos games work on a vita if you can never pause it...

Why ?!

My thoughts exactly.

Maybe it's because I've been using DOSBox for so long already, but I got the impression that it is actually very easy to set up and configure compared to other computer emulators. Console emulators are a different story with all the fancy menus and stuff (IIRC), but in the realm of personal computer emulation it's on the easier side of things.

- Search memory for values.

you save a few "bpm segment:offset && memdumpbin segment:0 ffff && xxd MEMDUMP.BIN |grep $values" , pretty handy if you ask me!

A few weeks ago I helped a friend setup PSX emulation through RetroArch. He had the slightly older release with the blue UI...

I can tell you without a doubt - that program has the absolutely worst UI I have ever had to use, on any program, ever. I wouldn't believe it has the capability of lowering "the bar" for anyone, but I guess it does? Maybe that's the UI console players are used to from modern consoles?

The latest version is a bit better, but maaaan...

With all that said, even though I don't see myself personally using RetroArch any time soon - in my book any project that expands the coverage, without taking anything away, is a good thing.

RetroArch UI is hot garbage, especially on PC.

Not much better on RetroPie......got pretty aggrivated with setting up mupen64 controller mappings for Crusin' World on Sunday....just gave up and emulated it on my Wii.

I spent quite a bit of time playing with it. I rather like it from the perspective of using on my couch gaming rig. I use BigBox to launch games on that, and have for years now. With Pure I've been able to add a curated list of a select few dos games that are console-ish. Within minutes of setting it up I had a blast playing Jazz Jackrabbit and Commander Keen. They now feel like native console ports. From a ease-of-use factor it works. I very much appreciate the automatic keyboard mapping to joystick buttons.
