Okay, not so sad anymore, swapped in the bios from the Biostar and we’re in business with DMA and VQuake! Was able to duplicate my 29FPS in 1.08 software Quake and now hitting 39.5 in VQuake! Up from 37.1.

Very nice frame rate. Would using a tnt or a voodoo 1 make any difference in getting a high frame rate?

Thanks!

I think a TNT would struggle on the POD but a Voodoo2 pulls 40fps in GLQuake at 800x600, no sound, on this setup. I kinda prefer VQuake though. The lighting is really nice. Too bad the Verite is so terrible playing Doom.

Quick update, this GA486 board has been rock solid so far running GLQuake and VQuake for a few hours now, with feipoa’s Biostar 2014 BIOS at that. Fastest cache and dram timings at 40MHz FSB.

Just wanted to share that I’ve found a hardware and software combo that allows for 40fps in GLQuake with sound! The -wavonly option def makes a difference for the better.

POD100
LS486e-c2, fastest timings
256k cache
Voodoo3
Awe64 Value
GlQuake 0.97 -width 512 384 -wavonly
3dfx MiniGL 1.40
3dfx Voodoo3 10000 drivers 4.11.01 3-20-1999
Win98SE

I’ve got my Voodoo2 /GA486 setup hitting just over 39fps so I don’t think the Voodoo3 is making the difference here, it just happens to work on socket 3 SIS boards.

Update, I’ve been able to beat my previous Phil’s QuakeBench score of 26.7 on an Asus 486SV2GX4 equipped with an Ark Logic 1000VL. My new best score is 27.1fps.

If we pull out all the stops, on the same hardware combo, using Quake 1.08 with SDD to use VESA Mode 11 320x200, I can reach my best socket 3 software only score of 30.4!

I should rename this thread to “Improving Quake performance on socket 3”. Applying the same principles mentioned in quotes but using an AMD 5x86 clocked at 180MHZ I’m able to hit 30fps in GLQuake with sound! My best score on an AMD 5x86 so far. This was on a LuckyStar LS486 rev d board.

Too bad the Verite is so terrible playing Doom.

its pretty great in FastDoom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6unNuPympE4 modeY 14, 13h 60, VBE2 300 fps

Have you tried PCI soundcards to see if they have lesser load with sound enabled?

Yes FastDoom fixes the issue for sure, was able to try that not too long ago, quite impressed. Hopefully someone can do the same with Dark Forces.

I like the idea of trying some PCI sound cards. I have a Sound Blaster Live in a slot one build I could pull.

It would be interesting to see broad benchmark comparison between the Verite and a Voodoo2/3 on the socket 3 system.

I can def set this up, maybe some of the games that were the same but ran on both cards specific API’s would be interesting. For sure Tomb Raider is one. GLQuake vs VQuake I already know the winner and it’s Voodoo by a mile. But there are still reasons to run vQuake, mostly for the aesthetic and running hardware accelerated Quake from dos just feels cool. Let me know what you want to see.

Gathering up all the 3D games specific to the Verite, and whatever patches, will take some time. I personally haven't done this search. A list of 3D games that work with a Voodoo2 and socket 3, which either have a timedemo or frame rate counter, are here: Voodoo 1 vs. Voodoo 2 on a 486

Picked up a Hercules Thriller 3D PCI version of the Rendition Verite 2200. It has the fastest clock at 63MHz, up from 55 on a Diamond S220. Unfortunately no change in vQuake score on a POD100.
