I have a serial + PS/2 compatible mouse that I use on my test bench, and wanted to get a spare because it's so useful. It's a Microsoft wheel mouse - the spares I picked up today are the MS Basic ones (no wheel). Interestingly they worked fine with the PS/2 port, but not with the PS/2 to serial adapter. Since neither worked, I decided to check the adapter.
I have three adapters and was using the green one:
Checking the pinouts, the green one looks like this (looking into the female PS/2 connector; numbered by the DE9 connector pins)
Which corresponds to this diagram found online:
The dark grey (middle) one has this pinout:

Now the important point: The MS Wheel mouse works with both the green and dark grey adapters. The MS Basic mouse only works with the dark grey adapter.
Hopefully this saves someone a bit of time, or saves some hardware from being binned!
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got 5-pin DIN.
