I had also heard this, mostly from this video:

It showed tons of games not working üroperly. So I never even bothered to test my Creative Graphics Blaster Exxtreme beyond the Windows desktop.

That channel's Matrox Mystique video also misrepresents the card heavily when it comes to audio stuttering - that is an issue that is specific to 440BX chipsets from my experience.

. Also I noticed my ELSA GLoria XL is from 1997, too.
Maybe this works a bit better, at least DOS compatibility should be better since it is handled ny an extra S3 chip, and also the card has a very good 250 MHz RAMDAC.

The Matrox Millennium II also has a 250 MHz RAMDAC.

This seems like very interesting videocard with combination of 3DLabs + S3 chips, but didn't you asked for a card that isn't longer than the 3dfx Voodoo?

Try your Matrox Millenium II (if it fits) and S3 ViRGE/DX (probably this one can be upgraded to 4 MB VRAM) cards in combination with the Voodoo and decide which one is more suitable for your needs with this system build.

Is a PCI Voodoo Banshee card too "1998" for this project?

I have a Matrox Mystique in my PMMX166/V1 build, it's rock solid for basically everything DOS/Windows I throw at it and the VGA signal is sharp and vibrant, can't not recommend it enough.

I went through my storage and what I found are:
Elsa Winner Pro X (S3 Vision 968 4MB, 220 MHz RAMDAC)
S3 Virge DX 2 MB
Matrox Millennium II 4 MB
ATI Rage Pro Turbo 4+4 MB
Creative Graphics Blaster Exxtreme (3dlabs Permedia 2 4 MB)

From this list i would pick ATi Rage Pro Turbo 8MB, i have used AMD K5 PR166 (117Mhz)
with Rage Pro and MotoRacer Direct3D worked smoothly after game update.

There is a patch to fix ATI compatibility problems in Keen 4, 5, 6
