I myself am a big fan of the ALS 4000 cards, only problem is their background hiss, which you can minimize somewhat by tweaking your audio settings. In Windows, when opening your sound mixer, be sure that all items are checked and showing so that you can mute all the ones you don't need (line in, mic, etc). Set your WAVE volume slider to the max and your master volume pretty low - like, literally about 10 percent up (I have mine centered between the first and second tick mark).

In a native DOS environment, I'd have to double-check my settings, but if I recall correctly, the least hiss comes from making sure that unnecessary items in the ini file have their volume set to zero and also the amplification value (I think the options are 0, 1, and 2) is also set to 0 with the master volume set somewhere in the high 20's.
