Ohh, I'm getting more and more confused with this. I seem to be going backwards rather than forwards with everything. 🙁 I've put the jumpers back to the way they were, made sure it's connected to B, and tried putting the pen drive in, but I keep getting Error 34 upside down. I've tried putting the latest FlashFloppy firmware on, but that doesn't work. So I'm guessing the factory default firmware isn't FlashFloppy. And it's stuck upside down, even if I try to reset to factory settings.

Have you tried with only a jumper on S1? If not, do that and run it by itself as A: and see how it goes. That's how I've been running mine, even before I put HxC on it. I didn't know any other jumpers had to be set.

Which chip does your Gotek use?

Hi. I believe it's AT32F435. Thanks. I'll try giving that a go in a bit. Just sorting out the basic functionality of it. But yeah, I have two jumpers on mine.

Managed to sort the thing being upside down by modifying the FF.CFG file. Last time I thought it was only the IMAGE.CFG I adjusted, but it just wipes it empty after I've plugged it in. Also, I kept getting Error 34, but didn't realise it means there's no images present. A bit of a worrying message just to say there's nothing to mount. ^^; Literally thought there was something seriously wrong with it.

The Artery ones are at least easier to flash, so you can easily override whichever firmware is on it whether it's FlashFloppy or something else.

Bingo! Progress! Okay, I definitely need A and B enabled in the BIOS, it seems. Just B turns it into 5 1/4 in Windows for some stupid reason. If I have both, and I have two 3 1/2 floppy drives, the Gotek is B. And the telltale sign is double clicking on it makes the device's light go green. I think what was happening, and I only noticed the possibility half an hour or so ago, is that two of the pins at one end are a bit bent. I believe they were like that when I first bought it. And I think one of those pins wasn't going into the connector. So the device was working, but not properly. Once I put the images back on and tried it again in Windows, it loaded up! 😁 So I've been able to re-install the USB drivers at least.

Okay, back to the initial problem - getting it to work in DOS. 😀

I take it that's one of the first/earlier models?

No, the AT32F435 is the current/latest model, per the wiki.

Didn't you get it working in an earlier post from 7 weeks ago? What changed?

Back to your initial question, not sure if you're confused:

I can't seem to work out how to get USB devices working in DOS, and with that, the Gotek FlashFloppy drive.

The Gotek is essentially a floppy drive to the host system. Getting USB devices to work in DOS is an entirely separate issue and the two are unrelated. The fact that the Gotek has a USB host port is irrelevant, the host system cannot "see" that USB port, it simply "sees" a floppy drive.

I did, yeah, but only in Windows, and as I said in an earlier post, the bent pins were probably not making contact with the connector. Or at least one of them wasn’t. So it seemingly stopped working for no reason.

Well, the two issues are separate, but I didn’t see the point in creating two threads. Both involve DOS. The first is being unable to get the Gotek working in DOS, (and I know its USB doesn’t count as a USB device to the system 🙂) as it just won’t boot, read, or copy anything when I try, and likewise - getting USB devices to work in DOS. I’m a bit unsure how or what to go for there.

Jumper positions don't look different in your photos, you've added a red box at JC.

Mine is as I showed .. Line1 would be the row to the right in your pics (away from the cable connection)
There is no jumper at JC!

In other words your first photo (and the second apparently) exactly match my drive, I've not moved them,
and it has worked in two different systems I've used it in.

Ah, I see other jumpers correspond to ones with the screen and dial. I only have the bare bones three digit one with just the two buttons.

Wait, what. Now I'm getting confused. ^^; They don't look different in my photos...? The first photo is how they were for me. The red box was just to show where I put it next, which I believe is JC...? Unless I've misunderstood the positioning? Vertical, as in the first pic, they're covering J5 and JA. If horizontal they're covering just the one, in the case of the second pic, JC. But I only tried moving mine as I was under the impression it's supposed to be at JC...? Even though it did, and does work, with how I originally had it.

Yeah, so now the Gotek is working properly in Windows again, I've just tried it in DOS and it still doesn't work. I type in B, the green light comes on, but it just says Not ready reading drive B. Abort, retry, fail?

Watched this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKbBxUd6hT0 - and didn't realise the host, in FF.cfg, needs to be set to ms-dos. Did that, and made sure the interface is set to ibmpc, aaaaaand... nothing. Still doesn't recognise it. 🙁

Okay, someone on the GitHub community offered a suggestion for me to try, which involves putting the jumper back to JC, remove the FF.cfg and cached config, and then reset to factory settings. I'm not holding my breath it'll work, but it's something.

Excellent! The suggestion given on GitHub worked perfectly! In my case, it definitely needs to be set to JC, which is what I tried initially, but that was to get it working in Windows. Also, both config files have to be deleted, and then the device reset to factory settings. DOS recognises it as B. 😀

Next issue - finding an appropriate USB driver for DOS so I can use any USB device, such as my pen drive.

I'm curious about the references to "FF.CFG" - Is this part of software supplied by GoTek? I don't use any extra software,
I just connected the GoTek to the floppy cable and it shows up and works like any other floppy drive.

As noted in previous msg, see bootable ImageDisk setup for some USB drivers I got to work in DOS (although it was a few years ago that I set this up, might be better options now - let us know what you get working)

I believe it is, yeah. It's in the directory available on GitHub, under Examples. I've found I've had to rely on it to get things working properly. Like now for instance, and after updating the firmware, the display is upside-down.

Oh, and thanks for the reminder. Yeah, I'll look into ImageDisk. I believe I need to make use of that anyway from one of my other threads, to see if I can rescue the contents of a floppy disk. Though for that I will need to get another physical floppy drive.

I think there might be a way to reverse the display - but I've never had to.

Like I said before - Mine is "factory fresh", original firmware and never had to install anything - just plugged it in like any other floppy drive and it worked.
- now I'm reluctant to consider updating to 3rd party firmware - what I bought it for was "future proof" - a non-diskette replacement for a floppy drive, and in that respect what I have works perfectly.

[I still have >dozen floppy drives - but media is getting harder to find!]

Yeah, apparently, newer models have 3.44 installed and are automatically the right orientation. Older models that have to have the firmware installed, like mine, have to set the right orientation in the FF config.
