VOGONS

Actually there's one major question we need an answer to before everything else.

That question is: guruNS, did you install the game from original media?

If the answer is "no": thought so. "Abandonware" is not supported on VOGONS, sorry.

If the answer is "yes": either you're lying or you are in posession of a precious piece of software that would make you a rich man if you sold it on eBay. Because you know, according to MobyGames, Wikipedia and GameFAQs, the game was never released on DOS.

Anyway, there's one small hint I can give you: TIMEDing is everything.

Oh, and as Qbix mentioned you have it setup incorrectly, too.

Super Star Wars for PC had the misfortune of never being published, so there can be no "install from original media". You can read about the history here: http://pcgtw.retro-net.de/index.php?id=games:starwars

The author of that article (the game's programmer) appears to have "leaked" the copy of the game that floats around on the net, as the help file included has his name at the end.

Interesting article, thanks for the link! I wonder what the legal status of the "floating" game is. I presume all content is still copyrighted by LucasArts (or whatever the company is called today), especially since the game obviously makes heavy use of tm'ed stuff (graphic designs, names, etc.). Ah, the wonderful world of ip (; .

Thank you for the directions. Here is the DosBox 0.74 file. I had to change the name because the site would not load a preferences file. So I zipped it up.

According to your status screen DOSBox isn't detecting any controllers at all. I'm not a OS X user though, could be that the native OS X build works differently from the Windows version (which gives detailed info about the controllers it is using). Or did you maybe have the pad disconnected while starting DOSBox? Anyway, all you need to know to fix the actual controller problem is described in my post above (from 2010-5-31 @ 10:48 am).

The sound settings (IRQ. I/O, etc.) have to be changed in the game's setup app. They have to reflect the values set in your dosbox.conf.

robertmo: the info guruNS needs is not really contained in the guide you've so "helpfully" linked to twice now. This would be apparent to you if you would actually read both this thread and the guide.

as you have no idea what you are doing at all start from reading the guide and manual

His problem really doesn't have anything to do with the manual.
I guess the problem has something to do with SDL detecting more axes for the joystick. Perhaps applying this patch would help http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&a … 551&atid=467234
guruNS, that would require you to compile Dosbox on your own though. With MacPorts this can be easily done (as long as you DON'T install the Dosbox port in MacPorts 😀)

I was surprised by the number of axes reported by DOSBox. Where are all these sticks and analog buttons?! (;

Regarding the actual problem I'm quoting myself:

Dominus he is using irq5, he doesn't know the basics, talking with him makes not sense untill he reads the simple guide... as you don't know what other crazy things he is doing

You are overreacting, yes, the game is configured for IRQ5, but the core of his problem is likely that SDL gets confused by the axes.

guruNS: as addict hinted at, please play with the joystick settings in the preference file. Especially the timed setting. Maybe that helps. The preference file is giving you short explanation on this, the Readme that comes with dosbox might give you more information.

irq5 may indicate not running setup
setup may contain some controller/calibration settings

May or may not... most joystick games do not have an option to calibrate, mostly just to switch controller type.
But even if it does, why not just tell him to check setup or install of the game? Beating around the bush and telling him to read the manual of dosbox is just making people not read what you write anymore...

SORRY FOR DIGGING UP THIS THREAD _BUT_:

There is a very nasty problem with your game hanging at the DOS Screen:

It will hang at this screen if you select "Roland GS" or "Roland MT-32" as Music card! It does that for me aswell on a real DOS machine. Also it might hang if you select SB16 or SBAWE32 as sound fx card. Sound Blaster Pro will be your best bet. Also, select Sound Blaster FM for music card. The game will start and work just fine!

Cheers
