The floppy version's config program has an option called "Music Card In Use", with choices for WaveBlaster, LAPC-1, and SCC-1. The config program in the original CD version has "FM Card In Use" with none of the synthesizer choices. You can draw your own conclusions from these facts, but it seems to me that there is no synthesized music (only "FM effects") in the CD version, even though the XMI files are included and the config program plays one for the "Test FM effects" option (note that this option in the floppy version is called "Test MUSIC").
It's possible that there is a command line switch or so that will cause the XMI files to be played instead of playing CD audio. Can't see anything easily in the executable because it's encrypted. BTW, the encryption is why a special cputype is needed: prefetch tricks are used to cause problems for people snooping around in the decryption code with debuggers.
